Question:
LAP on 4/13

I was wondering when I should start taking mymulti vitamins and using protein shakes? What vitamins do I need to take on a daily basis and how much protein is reccommended during this 1st week post-op period? The only thing my Dr. told me to eat right now is clear liquids. No vitamins or protein drinks yet. Does this sound normal to others who have had the Lap procedure?    — Michelle P. (posted on April 15, 2001)

It's not what my surgeon told me. He said liquids and that included protein drinks. I would do 2 hours of protein drink, and 1 hour of water, drinking 2 ounces of protein drink every 15 minutes. I can't believe a surgeon would say no protein drinks, but then I guess they are all different. Vitalady (Michelle Curran) could speak to this for you. Take Care and Good Luck!

My surgery is not until 4/27/01, but I saw my doctor yesterday for my lab work and received all of my post op information and he told me, "NO PROTEIN DRINKS". The reason being you will be taking a mulitvitamin which includes all of the protein you need if taken correctly. Protein is needed but according to your question you are required to take a mulitvitamin as well. There's your protein.

In the first days and weeks after surgery it's MOST important that you get plenty of fluids and eat what goes down well. As your new tummy heals you will be able to add other sources of protein to your diet. FYI: Multi vitamins DO NOT have protein. Dietary supplements *can* but not all do. Check the lables ;) Stacy
