Question:
HELP - 5-1/2 months postop and 6 weeks pregnant.

I am in a bit of bind...I am 5-1/2 months post from open RNY and I have found out that I am six weeks pregnant. I have lost 60 pounds up until now. Will this weight loss continue during pregnancy or will I gain? If anyone has any knowledge on this topic, please help me!! Thanks!    — tpiland (posted on May 10, 2001)

Hi! Please get in immediate contact with both your OB/Gyn Doc and sign releases so s/he can consult with your bariatric surgeon. There have been successful pregnancies after WLS.... your loss of 60 lbs is sure to make pregnancy more comfortable and maybe even help with labor and delivery. Be sure to get RIGHT in to the OB Gyn and ask about vitamin supplements, calcium and folic acid in particular. You're going to have to sort of ignore your weight loss and focus on growing a healthy baby right now. After delivery, you're sure to get back to your thinning process! Best wishes and congratulations!

Terri, Congrats on your pregnancy! I hope everything goes well for you. I have a friend who found out she was pregnant at 6 months post op, and she continued to lose throughout her pregnancy and had a healthy baby girl, she was only 5 lbs or so, but she was perfect. My friend needed vitamin shots once a month, and continuing vitamins was a must. The pregnancy took ALOT out of her and she was nauseated and throwing up the whole time. Her OB told her the baby will take what it needs, but leave her with nothing, which is exactly what happened. I wish you all the luck. Get in to see your doc as soon as possible!
