Question:
I need opinions on my work situation....

My last appointment before surgery is not untill april 30th! but i am on a cancellation list so that i can get in earlier. i just started a temporary job last week for some income for about a month. i already missed two calls to reschedule for this week! so i told the dr's office to call my work instead so they could get a hold of me durig the day. when i told my work this they were upset that i was even having a surgery and didn't tell them and they said i was not allowed to recieve personal calls for any reason. this greatly upset me. i talked to my fiance and he suggested switching to a night shift so i would be home during the day. i talked to my manager and she said i couldn't because of a 30 day probation for new people and that i should have discussed this in my interview but i was afraid they wouldn't hire me if i mentioned it, i had no idea i would start getting calls this soon to reschedule. i was very upset about this and they seemed to be upset t me as well. i thought about it for a second and decided a life saving surgery was more important than a stupid telemarketing job so i quit today. my fiance is very upset with me because we needed the extra money so i'm not sure if i did the right thing. what would you have done?    — LaKeAffy (posted on March 6, 2002)

I am sorry that happened. Was the job thru a temp agency? If so, make sure you haven't messed up your job record with them. If not, don't worry about it. People quit jobs after a short period all the time...just don't make a habit of it ; ) Since you need flexibility to acheive your main goal (WLS) I would look for a job thru a temp agency (Manpower) anyway...you can always turn a job down, no harm, no foul...

Was this job through a temp agency? If so, then let them know. Most of the time they are more flexible. If it's not through a temp agency, then once you get your surgery date, then give your notice. It sounds like they will not be supportive of you and will make your leave and return difficult. You may want to consider getting a cell phone so you won't miss calls.
