Hi Harvey, I'm sure your insurance won't drop you because you have to loose 10% of your overall weight to have Gastric Bypass.. And, I'm sure, since your seeking this medical procedure... You need to loose more than that. Loosing this weight before surgergy is crucial and very helpful in the fact it shrinks the size of your liver, which must be held up during surgery. Thus, making it much easier for the surgeon holding your liver up. Case in point! I was 100 pounds over my surgeon's ideal weight for me, so I had to loose 10 pounds before surgery. Loosing a few pounds compared to a hundred pounds is quite a different story. Another point is your insurance should be clueless to the fact you had to loose this weight before hand, anyway. Once your approved for surgery..... Your approved! Loosing this weight before hand doesn't change anything. I feel assured your insurance will look at this the same in your case, although you didn't mention how much total weight you needed to loose. I'm assumming it's at least 100 pounds or more. Remember medical necessities outweigh (excuse the pun)your needing to just loose weight! All of us have medical conditions, which warrant this procedure. It's not just wanting to loose weight. Or, it shouldn't be! If, you feel you can loose this weight without the help of this surgery and you have "No" medical problems.... Go for it! Good Luck in whatever you choose.

Hazel forgot to mention. The weight you were at your consult is what is turned in to the insurance company. If your surgeon requires you to lose weight, they don't even know it.

I don't think that losing the weight pre-op will have anything to do with your ins. And as far as you being able to lose the weight (as your surgeon suggests), that's quite a different story than "keeping it off." In my case, I have no problem losing the weight once I set my mind to it - but it ALWAYS comes back. Therefore, I need the surgery to help me with keeping it off forever. Good luck in whatever road you choose.
