Question:
9 weeks post-op...How soon can I color my hair?

I was going to have some red and blonde highlights put in my hair but I was told that I should wait. I was wondering if anyone knows how long. Will it cause me to have hair loss? Thanks for your help.    — Jennifer Z. (posted on April 15, 2002)

I am 7 months post-op and I have bleached my roots ever 2-3 weeks since i was 3 weeks post-op and could reach my arms allthe way up for a while to color my own hair. I have lost a little bit of hair from months 3-6 i am on the down side of it. I thought it was real drastic at the time i was loosing. But now I realize it was not all that bad of a loss. My hair is soft and shiny and looking great. Just my side of the hair color story, i am sure everyone is different. Nancy

I was about 8 weeks post op when I highlighted my hair... The hairloss from highlight was very minimal (I lost a little bit of hair every time i colored before surgery, it was the same amount) If it will make you feel better... Go for it!! Good luck on your journey!

I'm 11 weeks tomorrow .. and today I just had a weave done! I really needed a pick-me-up and it worked.

I'm a little over 4 months post-op and I had my hair colored just this past weekend. I talked to my hairdresser the week before, and explained that I was losing hair from surgery. He suggested NOT using peroxide, as it can be harsh on hair. He did a single-process rinse, to cover up my grey. I love it!!! It will only last about 6-8 weeks, but by then, hopefully, my hair loss will have stopped, and I can go permanent if I choose to. I had highlights done about 9 months ago, and the rinse lightened up the highlights more than my natural hair, so it's looks like I had highlights done as well.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm going for it! It always makes me feel so much better to get my hair colored so I guess I will risk a little hair loss. Thanks again!
