Question:
Hi guys! A newbie post-op here with a few questions.....

Hi everyone! Well, I did it! Open RNY with no complications on last Wed. I feel pretty good too. A few questions. 1.) When can I feel that I am "out of the woodsw" for complication risks, ie: blood clots and strictures? 2.) Anything I can do for these awful GAS pains? 3.) IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE (OR IS MY SCALE LYING TO ME) THAT I LOST 12 POUNDS IN 4 DAYS???? Thanks everyone!    — emilyfink (posted on June 16, 2002)

Emily, everyone differs as to "being out of the woods" for strictures. My first (and last) showed up nearly 2 months after surgery. I think that if you haven't thrown any blood clots by now, you aren't likely to, but I have to admit my ignorance - it just didn't happen to me. As to gas pains, you gotta drink your water and move your buns. That's the only way I know to get rid of it. No, your scale is NOT lying to you! Enjoy your loss as it comes. And finally, congratulations to you on your first big drop. I hope there are many more. Keep smilin', Margie B

Emily, congrats on your surgery! The gas pains were horrible. Sadly, gas-x never worked for me. What did work was walking around right after eating dinner, even if it was just doing laps around my dining room table. I'd go as soon as I'd feel the gas come on -even if technically I wans't done with dinner. That helped! Also, be sure to be chewing your food but try (if you can!) to not mix a lot of air in it. I had to experiment with chewing a bit to get the right consistency so that it went down and stayed, but didn't get al ot of air added in. I wish you luck!!! =)
