Question:
Questions about the diet just before surgery...

First off, I want to say- WAHOOO!! Only 26 days til my surgery!! Anyways, my surgeon requires a high protein diet two weeks leading up to the day before (then clear liquids only) and I am curious about a couple of things. How much would be considered high protein? Is a daily meal of (lean) beef a good idea? I know that steak is difficult to digest and I would think it might be a good idea not to eat it a few days before surgery. Is it alright to eat it within that first week of high protein though? I'm thinking alot of chicken, refried beans, peanut butter- what else? Start some shakes now? Thanks for your advice!    — karmiausnic (posted on August 22, 2002)

My doctor has me following the Atkins Diet before surgery. It is very high in protein and very very low in carbs. You may want to try that one.

I was on Atkin's also, but I was allowed a little "cheating for last meal...The extra protein helps your body during the liquid stage after surgery...and cutting out all carbs will jump start your weight loss. And the Atkin's diet (minus the fat) is very simular to your post-op diet.
