Question:
What does VBG, RNY, RNY-DISTAL, RNY-PROXIMAL, BPD-NO DS, DUODENAL SWITCH mean?

I am new to this web site and plan to have a gastric bi-pass but I am not sure what your abbreviations mean. Please let me know. Thank you! :-)    — Tamia J. (posted on August 29, 2002)

I can offer some help you can find right here on the obesityhelp website. Go the the top of the message page and click on "library". Now look for the title: pre-op topics on the left side of the page and then go down the list to: surgery types. This might answer some of your questions. Like I said, I can offer only a small suggestion for you.

Hi. Congratulations on the beginning of an interesting journey! You have a lot of research to do! Go into any search engine or to "open file" on your browser and type in "gastric bypass" or "weight loss surgery" and you will find information on all of the different types of surgeries. Good luck!

They are all different types of weight loss surgery. Since you are new, you have some research to do to determine which one is right for you. I will tell you, though, that when you find a surgeon, you may find that they only do 1 type of surgery and not the others, so either choose which procedure you want and then find a surgeon that does that type, or find the surgeon first and then have the type that he/she is comfortable with. They all work, just different types.
