Question:
Has anyone been prescribed Lomotil for diarrhea

I am still researching the surgery. My husband is diabetic and suffered from daily diarrhea for years. Finally I got him to talk to his doctor who said that it was a common problem with diabetics and prescribed Lomotil, which my husband now takes daily. It has literally changed his life - we used to have to plan our day around his "bathroom times". One of my concerns is that I will have similar problems after the surgery and since I work on client sites it is not something that is always handled gracefully. Since my fibromyalgia sometimes causes problems anyway, I'd like to know there is a remedy that will help keep me productive during work.    — Joyce L. (posted on May 28, 1999)

Not ALL of us need lomotil. A small percentage of us need Extra Strength, Fast ACting, Monolith Moving EXLAX! Although most seem to have a few months of getting "retrained", many of us settle into normal patterns we can live with. And some of us go RIGHT back to where we were before, or shoudl I say my mother & I regularly exchange "recipes"? Family trait and even my radical distal didn't change it! One has to laugh at our predicament! But at leasy, if I ever DO get to go, I can fit in ANY bathroom, ANYWHERE at my post-op weight of 112!

I had a proximal RNY and diarrhea is something that only happens when I eat too much junk, and then I kind of expect it. The surgery itself has actually caused me to go the opposite direction toward constipation. There are weeks when I only have a bowel movement every two or three days.

I've found that Lomotil does help with the diarrhea. Keeping a food log might also help pinpoint what foods cause the most diarrhea and then you can avoid them. Also, try not to drink liquids with your meals.

I have been having diarrhea since I had a right colon resection 5 years ago. I had a medial Gastric Bypass on April 1,99. and had diarrhea while drinking the designer protine drink. The diarrhea was incompasatating. After several weeks of this and trying Imodium advanced with some relief I asked for some lomotil. This worked well but I also switched to pro-blend 55 and have seen the diarrhea disappear Do not have to take the lomotil, and only use the imodium if I get cramps and this settles my gut. I only take 1/2 a tablet when I use it.
