Excellent question! my surgeon stated NO SUBMURSION of any kind (including bath tub) for 6 weeks. No strenuous abdominal exercise, which swimming is, for 3 months. After that you should be ready for just about anything! :~) AND, I found his advice sound. If you push yourself too soon you run the risk of hernia. :~( Major surgery and major life changes, don't push it too fast. Took me 8 years to get it all off and every single minute was worth it. :~)))))

I started a water exercise class about 4 weeks post-op. My doctor advised that I take it slow and to not do anything like laps around the pool. I am now 6 weeks post-op and am moving as much as anyone else in my class. I find I have more energy and am loving this form of exercise. I would highly recommend this form of activity to anyone who is overweight because it is easy to do and less stressful on the body than exercise outside the pool. And during the hot summer months, the water feels great! Good luck.
