Question:
Are there any students high school or college out there who have had this WLS done.

I am a college student considering having surgery and I want to have a time range of how long before I can get back into the swing of classes. When is the best part of the year to have it done?    — Marleen M. (posted on July 23, 2001)

Hi - I work fulltime and go to college fulltime...I went ahead and registered for classes this next semester as mine are internet classes...my classes start 6 Aug, my surgery is 14 Aug. I figured I would be able to complete this semester...even if I need to take an incomplete, which I doubt and finish up a week late. I didn't want to mess up my financial aide...it all depends on how much you are able to handle I guess. I posted a question similar to this and got an even number of responses for both pro and con as far whether or not to take classes. SO I figured what the heck, I'll give it shot. I can always take an imcomplete if I have to. It's really up to as to how much you think you can handle.

I am also a full time student. I am 11 days post op. I returned to classes one week later. I go year round. Since we cannot lift much I had my boyfriend carry my heavy book bag ( see they are useful for something j/k) and I brought a pillow to class. The class was a nutrition class how ironic is that. I found that although i may tire easily I get depressed sitting around the house I needed to get up and going even if it was just a short while. Best of luck to you Jenn

I go to college year round also. I had my open RNY on June 12, 2001. I got out of the hospital 4 days later and returned to school 6 days post-op. I am not going to say it was easy, because it wasn't. But I didn't want to get behind in my rigorous classes. I came home in the afternoons and took a short nap. I had fellow classmates bring their books so I could share with them. If I could have taken a week off, I would have. So, I guess it is up to you. But it is not impossible to go back right away, but you need to recognize if you are over doing it, and then slow down. Good Luck

Well, some of your decision will be based on how rigorous your program is and whether you are a freshman undergrad or a doctoral student. I had just finished my first semester as a full time doctoral student when I had my surgery. I had scheduled it for christmas break, and was VERY glad I did. I had some complications (yes, even Lap RNY can have complications), and although they were not severe, I would not have been able to go back to school. I had six weeks off for break and so I had almost that amount of time to recouperate.Although many people go to school soon after surgery, some of us are too fatigued to concentrate, too sick to attend class, or have to be re-hospitalized. Then again, you could always take an incomplete. Well, good luck with your decision.

I am a senior in college and I had the surgery four weeks ago. I'm taking two summer classes online and there was no way I could work on them the first two weeks because my brain was fried from the anesthesia. I am just now getting back into the swing of things. If you only go to school, you could probably do it over christmas or spring break. I work full-time AND go to school full-time, so I had to have it done in the summer. Good luck. :)
