Post op Open RNY 11-12-01 have lost 125 lbs, you could be describing me in this post. I have never used the shakes or powders....YUCKO. What little I can eat will be something I enjoy. I totally skipped the chewable vitamin stage too, they made me sick. All my levels are good so I am happy with my choices. If you see your surgeon and your levels are off then you can worry, until then work on adjusting to your new lfe and enjoy every pound you lose. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Stacey, you should contact your doctor! If you are not getting protein or your vitamins then something is wrong. I had a blocked stoma and that prevented me from eating as I should. Later I could not even drink and risked dehydration. Please tell your doctor what you said here. I am sure he or she will have a good answer for you.

Stacy, I did go through this, lots of us did. Just try to focus on protein when you do eat. Cheese sticks are good, yogurt, cottage cheese. I was never a protein drink person either, not because I was bad, but because I don't have money for it. I just did the best I could with natural eating. Just try to focus on what you DO put into your body when you CAN eat, that's all. Best of luck. :)

Stecy..I'm gonna be a mother hen here...Sweetie, if you don't treat your new system right you WILL see the results 5 years down the road...Carnation No-Sugar added Instant Breakfasts are pretty good and adding 1/4 cup of powdered milk adds protein..can also add a little no sugar, no fat Cool whip for a touch of sweetness if you wish.. Those vitamins and supplements are so important for your healing and to remain healthy..Your body is now counting on you to help it...You won't be sorry..Good luck and warm fuzzies...

I've been there with the eating. Suggestions. If you like hot tea, I suggest sipping on some of that BEFORE trying to eat. It helps RELAX the stomach, where as I've found that cold drinks only tighten up the stomach thus making it much harder to eat things and tolerate them. You said you did Juices. Juice for the most part is sugarish base and do not do them myself, as for one was told not to, and second when I did try them just alittle made me feel sickly usually. The one I have some luck with was cranberry but not till later on along the road. You have to try eating more. Even if alot of it is liquid or semi-liquid. Eating such small amounts is fine, that's how I started, but you DO have to eat more in the day then just once or twice. I know I had to greatly PUSH things as things either did not taste/smell good, I had no desire to eat, or I got sick from eating. I also got grossed out at any kind of protein shakes/drinks/bars I tried so far....so never got into that either. But you have to start watching yourself. At least do what I do and was suggested. I use the name brand (cause very small and easy to take) of One-a-day vitamins. I was told to take 1 tablet twice a day. It goes down easy and I usually take it after I ate to not upset my new tum. Your PCP can do follow up bloodwork every few months or as needed to keep checking your levels on everything to know if that is doing it for you. Also along the way suggest getting a 'bone density test'. Lastly....when I was not able to barely hold anything down I was told to take a FULL glass of ice (as it melts it dilutes) then pour in Gatorade and sip, sip, sip away. It kept me from getting what I called the shakes/shivers and that and kept my levels up and energy. Best advice I got too. Hope it helps.

It will be a while before you can eat much. Depending on the density of the food depends on how much I can eat. Even after 4 yrs. post-op I can still eat only 1/2 a sandwich, no matter what kind it is. Salad, I can eat quite a bit. Just eat a little bit every couple of hours & that will keep your metabolism going & you'll lose wt. faster -- if you stop eating, it will not only hender your wt. loss, but make you weak (this is per my WLS dr.)

Do not ever let anyone tell you it is normal not to eat much. Yes it is true you will be limited in your intake. But hopefully your physcian of choice referred you to a nutritionist which informed you of how you will be progressively able to eat from liquids, soft, and then solids. If you have any problems or concerns consult your physcian immeditately. Alot of people end up not eating correcting and end up having an ulcer which may eventually bleed and cause problems. Your doctor may even such protonix or nexium for you. Regardless, please do not allow any problem to excerbate. I am 2 years and 4 months post op. God Bless.
