Question:
Can a person get another hernia after the repair if they lose 50 more pounds?

My hernia is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The doctor told me he would do the surgery now since the hernia is large and is bothering me. The person who called me to schedule my surgery said that if I have the repair done and lose 50 more pounds, that I will take a chance of getting another hernia. I don't understand how when the doctor is going to use mesh. I am really confused now. The hernia really bothers me. I think it causes bowel problems and hurts and stays sticking out most of the time. The only time it goes in is when I lay flat on my back and I push it in. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks......    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on June 18, 2002)

I have had nine hernias in 16 years. 8 of them were when I was over 300 lbs (before my VBG) and the 9th was after loosing 140 lbs. Yes, they can and do recur - and being obese increases the risk - but skinny people get hernias too. But, it is also dangerous to wait on the repair. Your Doctor knows best.

Hi, I think the person who advised you that losing 50 lbs would potentially cause another hernia is misinformed. Hernia's are weaknesses in the muscle, and if it is repaied with mesh or otherwise, it is to strengthen the muscle where there is the weakness. There are risks involved with NOT getting them repaired if there is a potential for strangulation of the bowel...Losing weight could only help matters, not make them worse in my opinion. Talking to the doc is the best bet though. Best wishes, Ann
