Question:
70 cm bypassed, will I be successful in the long run?

Hi Everyone. I would like to hear from people that have had approx. 70 cm bypassed RNY. I have been reading up and it seems that this is a small amount to bypass, and small amounts cause necessity for a revision. My surgeon bypasses this amount on all of his patients. Have you lost the weight quickly, or slower than expected? Reached goal? And if you have reached goal, has it been a struggle to keep it off? Thanks for any input :)    — [Anonymous] (posted on October 21, 2001)

Hi There....I had less than 70 cm bypassed. I have lost 54 pounds in the first three months. It's not what I would call "fast" weight loss...but it is coming off. When I asked my surgeon about the bypass amount, he reminded me that RNY is primarily a restrictive procedure - with some malabsorption. The less bypassed, the less chance for malnutriation, the less concern I have with vitamin and mineral absorption, etc. All in all, I'm pretty happy. I still can not eat like I used to - I don't suspect I'll ever be able to. I'm still losing weight. It's not a "magic pill" though, this WLS. I have to do my part - that means drinking plenty of water, exercise (blech), get my vitamins and protein in, and don't eat garbage. Still, the surgery has made it so much easier! I wish you all the best of luck. Open RNY 7/17/01

70 cm is about 27 1/2 inches bypassed. 6 months ago I had lap/RNY and my surgeon said he bypassed less than that, I'm sorry I don't remember the exact amount but I know it was less than 27 inches. I have lost 80 lbs and have 20 more to lose to reach my goal of 100 lbs. My weight loss has been healthy and steady. Don't forget, in addition to the bypass you have a new tiny stomach that can help prevent you from over eating.

70 cm is 177.8 inches, or 14.8 feet. I doubt you will need a revision if you stick to your doctor's aftercare and diet plans. There's a surgeon here in Seattle with many success stories who only bypasses 25 cm. It's a tool... don't decide that you are going to fail, because surely you will. Good luck!

There are 2.54 cm per inch. 70 cm divided by 2.54 = 27.55 inches. I'm sure you will do just fine with that amount. Good luck!

Actually 70 in. is about 2.2 feet! 14 feet, you'd be in big trouble! LOL! :)

I had 60cm bypassed with my RYN in Aug. 1999. I lost 100 lbs. the first 8 months and the final 43 lbs since then. I reached goal today 143 with 143 gone. I keep a food journal every day and count every calorie. I range from 1600 to 2300 daily. Trying to stay at 1800. I also treadmill 2 miles as many days per week as I can. You can do it too. My control is so much better after my surgery. [email protected]. E-mail anytime. Sincerely, Cheryl
