Question:
I'd like to here from the RNY's about iron

I keep hearing that Iron Ferrous Sulfate is not the best thing for us to take. I am currently taking 28mg of iron ferrous sulfate in the a.m. with 500 mg. of vitamin C. Is this right. What's funny is, I'm not sure if this would have anything to do with it, but I get really dizzy really often and am always freezing. I also take a multi vitamin and 200 mg of B-12. Is this what I should be taking. I can honestly say that I don't feel like the most nutritionally sound indididual... FYI LAP RNY 4/16/01. Please let me know if what I'm doing is correct, if not all suggestions will be aknowledged. Thanks    — Kristina P. (posted on December 13, 2001)

My doctor recommends that we take ferrous fumerate (iron), as the portion of our intestines that absorbs other types of iron has been removed. This type of iron is absorbed further down in the intestines. The brand I use is TwinLab, Iron Caps. They are 18mg (100%RDA),so I take 2 each day. They are about $5 per bottle, 100 capsules. Also, re B12: we are instructed to take 1000mcg of sublingual B12 ONCE PER WEEK. As for multivitamins, again, we don't absorb as much, so we have been told to take TWO multivitamins per day that have 100% RDA of vitamins and minerals. I hope this helps! You might want to check with your doctor, though, as it seems we all have different guidelines. Best of luck!

I take ELEMENTAL iron (sundown brand) I take it in the afternoon (50 mg) with 500 mg of chewable vitamin C. The way that I understand it is this. You can take Iron (ferrous sulfate), it's just that the ferrous sulfate can not be absorbed (hence taking the iron with it) and it is just pooped out. AND, ferrous sulfate prevents the absorption of Vitamin E. So, why have 2 vitamin defiencies when you don't need any? Best of luck to you. Open RNY 9/17/01 Down 86 lbs from 361

The basics are covered here already, but what I see missing is calcium citrate. 2 multis, a sublingual B12, the Perfect iron + C, and 1500-2000mg calcium citrate. Read the label carefully, as some will be 2 pills = 500mg, some brands are 4 pills = 500mg. Think in 500mg increments for best absorption.

You may be iron deficient. I have the exact same problem. Dizziness and being cold. I have been trying to find the magic absorption formula. Some people take iron IVs every 6 months. I have a feeling it's in my future. Just one more thing to consider.

I use iron bisglyconate. I take one per day with a vitamin C tablet, and it has helped my iron levels, which had been slightly low. It also is a nonconstipating type of iron--an important feature for me.
