Question:
How do I decided which type of surgery is best for me?

I had wls 09/1995. For the better part of the past 6 years I throw up after every meal. (I had a VRG) I am ready to have surgery again. I need that "ring" removed, as that is the source of all my throwing up. I cannont chew food small enough or I can't seem to eat slow enough to keep it down. My life is miserable because of it. The DS is more appealing to me than the RNY. I have found in my research that the surgeons either do one or the other, so like in any business they are going to say that their product (surgery type) is best. I would like to hear from post op patient from both types of surgery. Thank God insurance is not going to be a problem. I am a full time student and will be waiting until summer for surgery, so I have some time to "wiegh" the facts. (punn intended :) )    — Nanette H. (posted on December 30, 2001)

RESEARCH!!! will determine what surgery is best for you. What makes you think that post-ops wont be any less bias then the doctors who perform any particular surgery? For everyone that likes RYN, there is one that believes their DS is better and visa-versa. It such and indivdiual thing. I can understand you asking those who have had both, but you've answered your question. Since its highly unlikely once you've had RYN OR DS you can decided down the road that this one didnt work so I should try the other, your choice should be made by researching BOTH surgeries "mechanicals", weighing the pros and cons of each, speaking one on one with qualified surgeons who perfrom them and make a prudient choice basic on "facts" and your "own" personal life-style, your own comfort level to commitmenting yourself to following the guidelines of either one you chose. Like you said, physicans are bias to their produces, we are bias to our particular surgeries due mostly to how we've progressed.

No one can make the decision but you. Here are some things to think about. First, the RNY is probably going to have the same affect on YOU as your VBG. Your stomach is just as small, is cut off, etc. The BPD/DS will allow you to do the things that you say you want to do (eat bigger bites, etc.). From where I'm standing, the DS looks like the obvious choice for you. But you already knew that. I had the RNY and have never thrown up, can take regular bites, don't have to chew etc. It works for ME which is the most important thing. Now you decide what you think will work for YOU. Good luck and God Bless!
