Question:
Does anyone know what Public Aid requires to approve surgery?

I am trying to find out what Public Aid in IL requires to approve the WLS...I am 275 pounds and am 5'6" i have knee problems and can hardly walk most days, I have diabetes in my family, have been diagnosed with depression and NEVER sleep at night anymore...I don't know what they consider enough of a reason for surgery and I certainly dont wanna waste anyones time....I get to go see the Nutritionist for Dr. Oliphant on Nov 17th and Dr. Oliphant for a consultation on Dec 1st....I just dont wanna wait all that time for nothing and I certainly don't want to waste their time and take an appointment space from someone who might actually get approved. If anyone can help me I woukld certainly apprieciate it!!    — Tracy B. (posted on July 16, 2003)

hello, I'm on disability and have been for couple of years now due to health issues. As long as you have a doctor that recommends the surgery and you have any weight related health issues, you should have much of a problem with approval. Diebetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease run rampit in my family all females in my immediate family passed before 50 so for me it was vital that I get approved especially since I have high blood pressure already and other somewhat debilitating problems. Never think of the process as a waste of time. I know you are anxios to find out what they will say, but remember nothing ventured nothing gained in this life. Please let us know what happens.

Hi, Public Aid of Illinois rarely turns down anyone with a BMI of 40 or higher. As long as you have a referral from your PCP to your surgeon.
