Question:
Has anyone tried accupuncture for neuropathy (burning feet)?

I am 4 weeks post op and continue to have severe pain in my feet, caused by nerve damage from diabetes. I've tried Effexor and pain meds to no avail. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried accupuncture?    — duane B. (posted on October 19, 2003)

Have you seen a neurologist? My mother has severe neuropathy and her neurologist has her on Tegretol. They use anti seizure medications to treat the pain of neuropathy. Most of the antiepressants do not work. They do have to keep tabs on your liver functions periodically when you take an anti seizure med. However, my Mom said it is the only thing that has ever worked for her. Stay away from Neurontin, which they also perscribe for neuropathy because it causes the "muncies". Today there are all kinds of options for neuropathy, however a neurologist usually knows best about the treatment of this. Some PCP are knowledgeable, but just taking pain meds usually does not work and I was told Effexor does not work for such. I sure hope you feel better..I know it was difficult for my Mom until she got the right meds.Take Care.

Have you discussed this with your diabetes specialist? I know that mine has been involved with a study using seizure meds for neuropathy. I don't have a problem with it, but my mother-in-law does, so I asked the doctor. She said they are seeing some positive results with them.

I haven't used acupuncture for that, but I have for almost everything else, with great success. I highly recommmend it. Your doctor at your exam should let you know if he thinks it will work well or not. Nancy

I use a doctor of Applied Kinesiologist. This has stopped my pain and burnning in my feet and hands completely.

Neurontin has really helped my mother's neuropathy in her feet and legs. She weighs 88 lbs.; we wish it would give her the munchies! It's worth a try to see if it helps. If it does cause problems with appetite, maybe you can deal with that if it gives you relief.
