Question:
How do you get an appointment with the surgeon in Canada?

Do you just call the surgeon or do you need to have a referral from your family doctor? I hesitate to go to my family doctor because is is less than caring re: my weight issues    — Valerie W. (posted on April 24, 2001)

Hi Valerie: Yes you do need a referral in Canada to any surgeon. If your family Doctor is not very caring, I suggest its time to look around for another Doctor. I know there are shortages of Doctor's in some areas but don't give up hope. It can take many months to get an appointmet once the referral is made, and then its many months after that before a surgery date, 8-12 months all told, in Ontario anyway. A pain for sure, but at least we don't have to battle with insurance companies, its always covered in Canada if you are at least 100 pounds overweight. Good luck!
