Question:
Is it normal to feel this good so soon?

My surgery (RNY distal - open) was only a week ago, on 5/21/01, and I'm curious about a few things. My pains seem to be going away (or at least becoming more bearable) at such a quick rate. I'm able stretch & twist more (I'm careful not to overdo it), and I seem to have a burst of energy. I thought that after such a major operation, I'd still be rithing in pain & conked-out in bed. I came home from hospital with Percoset pills for pain and I haven't used any of them yet (well, maybe b/c they taste so disgusting, I'd rather take pain). Is there some pain that's coming down the road soon? ALSO, I'm surprised I'm not really sore in my insides, with all the fiddling around that was done in there. LASTLY, is it normal to kind of feel yoor new stomach? I could've sworn I felt my stomach when the jello came into it. Also when I had some gassines, I thought I felt the staple line. I felt it slightly to the left & alittle higher of my incision. Maybe its my vivid imagination, I don't know. ONE MORE THING -Does anyone know if I could get a video of an actual RNY gastric bypass surgery? Now I'm getting so curious about what exactly happened to me in the OR while I was out.    — lalasmommy (posted on May 27, 2001)

You can watch Carnie Wilson's WLS on her website Spotlight Health.com, Also look for the rerun on MSNBC called Last Chance or Second Chance it's been on lately. Plus no pain is a good thing!!!

I emailed you the link to a sight that allows your to watch an RNY procedure online using RealPlayer. It is REALLY graphic, I must warn you. Take care!

THIS IS AN ADDITION TO MY POST. NEEDED TO ELABORATE. ---THE VIDEO I WAS LOOKING FOR NEEDED TO BE PREFERABLY OF AN *OPEN* PROCEDURE, LIKE I HAD AND I WOULD NEED AN ACTUAL VHS TAPE. I HAVE WEBTV AND IT DOESN'T ACCEPT THE REAL PLAYER & IT ALSO WON'T PLAY THE CARNIE WILSON VIDEO. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE SUGGESTIONS, THOUGH.

I felt great about a week out and was already walking about two miles a day at that point. Everyone's different; some people take weeks and weeks to feel even a little "normal" again, and some are up and running around super early on (like me). I could also feel my pouch early on. If you read my profile, you'll see the description of that. The sensation I had immediately post-op has mellowed over 12 weeks, but I'm still more physically aware of my pouch than I ever was of my stomach. Finally, your insides don't contain the same amount of nerve endings as your skin does. Most of the pain many people experience is due almost entirely to outer incision pain and not internal work. Later on, as your innards heal more, you might experience a bit of pain from the scar tissue on the inside, but this is really not bad at all. I started feeling that (kind of a pulling pain, and occasionally sharp) at about six weeks out, and my surgeon (who rocks, btw) told me to carefully and gently stretch my abdomen to help soften that tissue. I was also off all pain meds within two weeks. The second week, I only took my painkillers before bed to help me position myself. Otherwise, it was all good from about day 3 on out. Take care.

I had my surgery on May 24, 2001. It was Lap. I have been doing great. I have that burst of energy that you were talking about. I also can fill when the jello's going down. Isn't that a weird filling. I was out of the hospital 3 days after my surgery. No pain medication the day after surgery.. It's great to fill this great. Good luck on the new you.
