Question:
Is there anything I can do to alleviate the constant nausea Im having?

I had an open RNY 2 weeks ago and have been experiencing constant nausea from the time I wake up each day. Even water seems to make it worse. It is making it very difficult to get my fluids in or get enough protien. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.    — Jolie M. (posted on August 1, 2001)

Jolie, I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. I too was nauseaous all the time at first. It took about six weeks for the nausea to go away. Hot tea helped a little, and laying on my side seemed to help. Anytime I moved I felt very sick. If the nausea continues, you might want to see if your stoma is narrowing, I hear that can cause nausea and vomiting. That wasn't the case with me and it did get better. Hang in there, I wish you a speedy and smooth recovery!

If you are nauseaus in the morning , have you spoken to your doctor about this? Also you must tell him you cannot get in the water you need. I had these symptoms , and my doctor had me take pepsid 2 times a day , the problem stopped in about 2-3 days. But you need to describe these symptoms to the doctor , as the previous poster suggested it could be a narrowing of the stoma. Or something as simple as the after surgery nausea that most people experience that can be relieved by drinking a little warm broth or peppermint tea.Rembember the first 3 months are the worst. And you must keep in contact with your doctor.

My Doc put me on a anti nausea medicine it was a strong one I took it for about three week and then it finally stopped...I also had such a hard time and 4 months later I still have problems with the stoma closing..I go tomorrow to get dilated again....such fun... put crystal light in my water and that helped get it down..hope some of this helps.

Keep telling yourself, better days are ahead! The nausea will subside with time. I'm 3 mo. post op and when I do get nauseated I find that nothing settles my stomach like spearmint. Couldn't tell you how many rolls of the spearmint sugar free breath savers I've gone through since I came home from the hospital. It works faster than any medicine, working immediately and giving me fresh breath at the same time. I've got a roll at bedside, computer, purse, car, living room. Give it a try! Hang in there!

I realize I am answering this quite awhile after it was posted, but for anyone else that might read this question, here is my two cents... I went through this too. You may want to ask your surgeon to scope you and check for a marginal ulcer. I had one... I couldn't keep anything down... not water, not even my own saliva... After being diagnosed, I started taking Prilosec and Carafate... was better within a few days. Hope this helps.
