How soon after surgery can I take a cross-country flight?

How long should I wait after RnY surgery to take a long (3 hour) flight? I'm supposed to go to a family reunion.... but no way can I *drive* that far!    — Marjorie B. (posted on August 9, 2001)

I asked this same question to my surgeon the day I was discharged. He recommends no flying for four weeks post-op. I think it might have something to do with the seatbelt and all.
