Question:
BMI 36 Is it time for plastic surgery? Or WLS? Lost over 100lbs by myseslf.I'm stuck

I have a BMI of 36, my weight is about 205, I'd like to be at 160lbs, I'be been stuck at the same weight over a year, after losing a little more than 100lbs, a year or so later, I now have an apron, and excess skin that drives me nuts, Would it be appriate to see a plastic surgeon now, or consider WLS to lose the additional weight I'd like to lose. I'm really frustrated here, not knowing which way to turn only that, I hate my skin. Anyone have similar problems or concerns?    — julie M. (posted on April 9, 2004)

Julie, Congratulations on your weight lose. I admire you for what you have accomplished. At your current wieght and BMI, you likely would not qualify for WLS, unless you have several co-morbidities. Plastic Surgery would likely not be wise as well, as you should be within 20 lbs. of your ideal weight for satisfactory results. However, if you are self-paying, I'm sure you would be able to find a surgeon in either area who would be willing to help you. I would suggest consulting several doctor's in both fields for expert advice. Good luck to you.

Congrats on your loss! Thats an awesome accomplishment! I agree with the other poster. You basically want to lose 45 more lbs. WLS probably isn't the answer for you since its for people who need to lose 100lbs or more. You've already lost 100 on your own! Most Plastic Surgeons do free consults so go and see what one has to say. Make sure he's Board Certified!! Also, have you tried changing your routine, your diet etc? Sometimes if you shake things up a bit, it will get your body to start 'moving' again. Also, is this a weight you were at for a long time before you gained the 100lbs? Sometimes our bodies have a 'memory' and get comfortable at a weight. Congrats again on your accomplishment. You should be very proud of yourself! Don't give up!

Hi, I really can't say, My pre-op wt was 400 lbs I'm now 200lbs after 16 months. My surgeon has sent me to see a plastic surgeon, and I have a appointment this month. My goal wt is 160 lbs.I will not make my decision just yet. until I talk to my PS. Congrats on your WT loss. you have done very well. I would advise you to go see what your PS says.

I am not a goal and the likly hood is probably not feasable. My surgeon said that I probably would not get below 240 pounds. I started out at 472 pounds. I am scheduled for my TT on the 19th of this month. Whether or not you are ready for PS is your call and the PS you see. You have done an excellant job on losing the 100 pounds on you own. It will only cost you and office visit to see what the possiblities are. Good luck

If you've been that successful on your own, and kept if off for a year, you certainly don't need WLS! You did great! If you think this is where you've stablilized, you could go ahead and get the panniculectomy. It may kick start your weight loss again (don't know why, but I've heard that it can).
