Question:
Is it possible to undergo WLS, op and post op, by oneself?

My family lives in South America and I don't want to worry them with my WLS. I haven't informed them about my intentions, just mentioned to them a possible gallbladder op. My fam and friends don't share my feelings on WLS and/or liposuction for improvement of health and/or physical appearance. How can I manage WLS on my own?    — [Anonymous] (posted on May 28, 2000)

There are lots of people that successfully undergo wls alone. You need to gather lots of info so you can realistically assess and decide if its something you can do. I was pretty confident that I could have taken care of myself, but my doctor insisted that I stay with family or friends for the first week after discharge from the hospital. I had to force myself to ask relatives for their support - and I'm glad I did; I stayed with them for 3 weeks and they waited on me hand and foot!! I suggest you join a list at egroups that I belong to - its called "OSSG-FacingItAlone" (please email me for the URL) -- all members of the list have either had surgery alone or are contemplating it.

I read of one very gutzy lady that had all of it done alone. Her family was out of state and no one there to go thruogh it all with her. Luckily, this site as well as other sites for weight loss surgery have angels around to be supportive. Ask for an angel here at obesityhelp.com or go to [email protected]. There are some very wonderful people around to help. You can probably find someone in your area to see you through it by being there for you.. Hope this helps you, good luck!

I went thru it alone -- and with a 23 month old toddler. Yes, it was hard. Very hard. The first week was just awful and I was very down and depressed. And in pain. But I had neighbors and friends who helped me do things like load the dishwasher and cut my grass and run groceries. Don't forget, you can't drive right away. If you would like to email me, please feel free at [email protected]. I came up with a lot of ways to help myself that you might find useful. Good luck to you! It's hard, but it can be done!!
