Question:
I need help from Oregon people!

My PCP wants me to have a Psych. evaluation done before he submits a request to see the surgeon. I asked him if he wants a Psychiatrist or Psychologist to do the test. He said either would be fine. So I called my insurance and they need a referral from my PCP. I called my PCP's office and they want me to find someone I want to see before they will send out a letter. I then called my insurance company again and they gave me referrals but none of the referrals do the test. I'm a college student so I don't have a couple of hundred dollars to spend on this. I finally just told my PCP that I don't care who I see I just want a referral letter. Is there any Psychiatrists or Psychologists that anyone would recommend in the Salem area? Do they take OHP? Thanks for letting me vent and for your help.    — Jenifer S. (posted on November 3, 2000)

My surgeon requires a psyc evaluation. I was lucky because I was supplied with a list of six doctors. What I found is that a psychiatrist tends to just talk to you, while a psychologist tends to do written tests, i.e. the Minnesota Multiphasic. You might ask your PPC to recommended two or three doctors, call them, tell them what you want, and see how you feel about their answers. If you find one that you feel good about have your doctor refer you. Good luck.
