Question:
Has anyone experienced hip pain post-op following any excersice or strenuous activity

I am 9 months post-op, at 105 lb loss so far.(No loss for 2 MONTHS!!) Anyway, I bought a really nice treadmill, and began speedwalking for 35 to 55 minutes at a time just about every day to every other day. I figured buyimg a really good treadmill would reduce the risk of bone spurs and what-not, but lately after I work out my hips hurt for DAYS!!! I am beginning to think I have cancer or something foolish. I need someone to realte to me to easer my mind- like tell me its just because of the weight loss and lack of use of this lazy body!!! Thanks everyone...    — Lauren P. (posted on June 27, 2001)

Perhaps you should start a little slower than speedwalking. Start slow and build up your time and speed. I have bursitis in both my hips and the pain you are describing sounds very familiar. It wouldn't hurt to check with your pcp to be evaluated for joint problems like bursitis or arthritis.

I also have hip pain from walking or any weight bearing exercise? In fact swimming and water aerobics made it worse too. After suffering for a year, my dr did a ct scan and sent me to pain specialist. It turned out the pain was from arthritis in my lumbar 3 and 4 vertabrae. The dr sent me for physical therapy evaluation and treatment. the worked with me 3 X's a week for 4-6 weeks in a lumbar stabilization program.. I can't believe the results. I did 30-45 minutes of easy water exercizes and some land exercises too. They were all aimed at strengthening my abs, quads and gluts as well as increasing my flexibility. I still have a little discomfort and can get relief with tylenol, stretches and a hot bath. Before the PT I was taking flexeril and about 18 otc Advil a day, ( I am pre op). I would ask your dr to consider the above if this is a problem that is persistent. I think most of us have learned to ignore our bodies because of the shame about our weight. Learining to move it correctly and at its own pace really helps. Good luck, I know how hard it is to get through the days with pain. Kathy
