I would like to here from anyone that has had it done in MI.I am afraid, but for my health I know I must do something. My asthma is very bad I have a hard time breathing with my weight, and this sever asthma that I have. I would like to here from anyone that had asthma, and how it now after the surgery how it has improved. The Bariotric cener in YPSI called and said my insurance sent a letter stating that I was approved what does that mean exactley? I was suppose to have pysch eval, and get a history of medically supervised, diets. So, how can they just approve me that quick was it because my asthma and all the meds I take were listed? I am guessing I have to call them but it is a holiday today they are closed, I have Blue Cross& Shiled PPO.( Excuse the bad spelling)    — Annette B. (posted on May 28, 2001)

Annette, I have done a lot of reaearch on this because I was looking for a lap surgeon in MI also. Dr. Scholten in Grand Rapids does lap if your BMI is not too high and if you haven't had any other abdominal surgeries. Also a group of doctors at Michigan Medical PC in Grand Rapids do lap surgery. I believe they are Drs. Baker, Foster, Smith & Vissar. There are also a number of doctors in Ohio that do lap if you are interested in going there. You are lucky that you have been approved by your insurance already. That is one big step behind you. The other tests that you mentioned, I believe, are done because the results are needed by your surgeon before he does your surgery. Good Luck. Peggy

I too live in Michigan (Detroit area) and have had a very difficult time finding a surgeon who does lap-RNY. I know about the surgeons in Grand Rapids, however they take about 6 to 9 months to get you in for the surgery. There are several surgeons in the Toledo area.....Dr. Samuel J. Christian (419)447-9313....Dr. Mark D. Kligman (419)383-4529...Dr David Richards (419)251-4674 and more I'm sure. these all do the surgery laparoscopically and Toledo is only about 1 hour from our area. Depending on where you live you may want to consider calling one of them. If you're not dealing with time contraints (I need to schedule the surgery in the summer because I'm a teacher)...then give the Grand Rapids docs a call....I've heard wonderful things about all of them. Best of luck....God Bless!

I have heard of a Doctor I think is in Oakland County. I know that he was doing the surgery out of a hospital in Macomb County . I can't remeber the city. I know that they stopped doing the surgery at that hospital and the doctor moved to , I think , ST. Joseph's by Moross and I94. I can find out the name of the doctor if you are interested. My friends' daughter had lap wls done last Nov. I do know that she had HAP Insurance. E-mail me if you want at [email protected]. I only have to make one call to find out his name.
