Question:
Did anyone have an exercise routine before the surgery?

Did anyone find it helpful to have jogged and done weight training before the surgery. Does regular exercise before the surgery reduce the risk of complications?    — J C. (posted on July 7, 2003)

My surgeon required that I lose some weight before the surgeon, so I have been eating better, more protein and very few carbs, lost 10 lbs, but the excercise is really helping. I swim laps everyday for 30 minutes and then do about 15 minutes of other excercises in the pool, and about 3 days a week or evenings I ride my bike for about a 1/2 mile. It is so hot here in Arizona, that it limits any walking, and I have to ride my bike or swim in early morning or late late evening. It was 114 degrees today, and this morning at 8:30 it was 87 degrees. I try and walk as much as I can on the weekends with my family and once a week I run after my 3 year old grandson, that tires me out. I also, do the treadmill in the excercise room once a week, I almost forgot that. I plan on keeping up my excercise routine after WLS, as soon as the doctor will let me.

I started walking about 4 months before surgery. At first I could barely make it around the block. By the time surgery came around I was up to 1.5 miles a day. I'm convinced that this exercise routine (and the fact that I also lost 60 pounds pre-op) made the surgery and the post-op period much, much easier.

I started working out and eating a lot of protein 6 months before surgery. In addition to losing about 60 pounds, I di great post op. I'm two weeks post op. I've lost almost 30 pounds and i'm back at the gym walking on the treadmill 2 miles a day. Amy

I decided in January to have surgery in the summer. Iwanted to be in the best possible shape so I started weight lifting. I especially wanted my arms and legs to be strong so I could protect my tum tum after surgery. I did some cardio but not much. I amazingly lost 25 pounds pre op. Good Luck.
