Question:
I am 3 weeks post-op and need to know if I am over eating or what?

I eat the following 1/2 cup 2% cottage cheese 2 popsicles 1 cup 2% milk 1/4 cup rice salad 1/2 fat-free muffin 1/4 cup pudding flavoured with splenda and using 2% milk This is in a day not everyday but sometimes. So Am I a pig? I just graduated onto pureed but it is real hard to get them down    — Lady U. (posted on August 4, 1999)

Not too much, but the wrong things. Try to eat more protein, tuna, eggs, cheese. More low fat, more protein.

Hi Cindy. No you are not over eating. In fact I'm not sure you're getting enough protein. What about fluids. Are you sipping water all day. If not you need to be because you're not getting enough fluid. Good luck.

I am also 3 1/2 weeks postop (open RNY), and I don't think you're overeating, BUT, I do think you need to be getting more protein. For example, I eat an oz. of cottage cheese at every meal, and also an oz. of pureed meat (chicken, pork, fish). I also eat about 2 oz. of fruit daily (applesauce, baby prunes, pineapple, mashed banana), and a little carbohydrate (usually an oz.of mashed potatoes). I also try to eat a poached egg daily instead of a meat (I'll watch cholesteral levels later!), and I sneak in an oz. or two of pureed vegs (green beans, squash, low fiber stuff). My dietician has me eating 3 to 4 oz. at a meal. Does this help? Good luck to you! Charlene May

Do you stuff yourself or pace yourself? Do you think you are eating too much? How many times a day are you eating? I only ate 3 times a day, and not much at each sitting. That changes as time goes by. If you think you are doing the right thing, go with it. If you are eating constantly, I would limit it to three times a day. Talk to your surgeon if you can't determine the correct amount. Good luck!

This menu looks good to me. I would keep count of the calories to make sure you are staying under 1000. This should definitlely be under 1000. Keep up the good work!!

You are by no means a 'pig'. My doctor advises us to have two caloric meals aday. He doesn't care when(time wise)we consume them. We are to eat for only 20 minutes. If we need a third meal or snack we are to eat only 'free of calorie foods'. Like a big salad with calorie free dressing. And lots of water and calorie free beverages. You are doing better than I did 3 weeks post op. I was still on clear liquids. Jello was my best friend. And frozen sugar free koolaide that I shaved. It has been 6 months, rice and I still do not like each other. I would sugest that you increase your clear, calorie free liquids. It helps to flush out the toxins the body is producing while burning up the fat. It hydrates joints and helps to reduce edema. I have lost 123# since January 11, 1999. Keep up the good work! With pureed foods... take your time eating and chew!chew!chew!. It really made a difference for me.
