Question:
Anyone know if the state of alabama is going to make insurance pay for wls?

Ive heard a rumor that Alabama is going to make insurers pay for WLS, and I was wondering if that would include Companies that are self insured? I have insurance thru Winn Dixie Co, and they EXCLUDE treatment for weight control, and I have been denied coverage for this surgery, but if this becomes a law, they would have to cover it since I live in Alabama right? Any info would be helpful. Dina    — Dina L. (posted on January 28, 2002)

Welcome to the world of insurance for WLS traumas...from what I understand, even if a state makes a law (like Md)

It depends entirely on how the law is written. It can be different from state to state. You might want to find out if there is a state governmental agency or office that can give you more information.

Federal Mandates apply to all insurance companies, self insured, HMO's, PPO's, etc. State Mandates do NOT apply to self-insured companies

Dina, one other thing. The mandates that are applicable to you are the mandates applicable to the state in which the policy is issued, not the state in which you reside. I just noticed that your policy is BC of SC not AL.
