Question:
5 Months Post Op why does my stomach ache after I eat?

I am 5 months post op, Lap RNY, and lately I have been having stomach aches about every 3 to 4 hours after eating. When I eat something solid it goes away in about 15 mins. What is going on in my stomach to be aching? Am I eating too little at meals? I usually have about 3 to 4 ozs. of protein at breakfast, lunch and dinner, and then 2 protein drinks (30 grams of protein each) between meals. Then a fruit and sugar free pops for a night time snack.    — janice L. (posted on July 12, 2003)

Do you take pepcid or one of the other over the counter type stomach meds? My surgeon recommends them from day 1 after surgery. When you have a major surgery or other major life change, you end up with stress showing in the stomach. You could possibly be having some stomach irritation just from having had surgery that has finally become an issue. Often times eating relieves the discomfort as the stomach has food to mix with the natural hydrochloric acid found there, so it isn't irritating itself. You should go see your regular md and explain what is happening and ask him what you should do. He may just tell you to take some over the counter stuff, or order some of the new stuff - like nexium, aciphex, etc. Unless you are eating something very spicy or hot, it really doesn't matter what you eat. The issue is the irritation, not what or how or when you eat. Hope you're feeling tip top soon! karen (-150.5 lbs, 297/146, 9/06/01)
