Question:
What's in my throat?

I am 3 weeks post op and I am constantly having to hiccup and burp. The problem is, when I burp, I feel like something is stuck in my throat almost like a foam. What is this, why is it happening and how do I get rid of it?    — Randy P. (posted on October 16, 2003)

I hiccup and burp when I'm full and need to stop eating. As far as the foam, it's part of the healing process of your new tummy dealing with the food that's in it. I had occurrences of that off and on til I was about 6 months out. The key for me was to stop eating sooner.

In my pre-op class, I learned about "frothing", which sounds like the foam you described. My nurse suggested that a small cup of hot tea before meals may help with this. Good luck,

OH MY GOSH! Finally someone has the same symptoms I had! The "frothing" drove me crazy! Please know that it does go away. I had the frothing for about a month. What I found was drinking alot of water. Eventually it will go away. As for the hiccuping sp?, I hiccup when I get full. I know that when I start that, within another bite is when I should stop. Some people say that is there signal to stop. Anyway, just wanted to relate. It gets easier darlin I promise. E.........

At last, someone knows what I am talking about. I am 5 weeks out and get the same feelings. Nobody at my support group ever experienced the foamy feeling and I was starting to think there was something wrong with me. I have noticed in the last week it is not happening as often so I am hopeful it will stop soon.

Are you drinking with a straw? I found that the straw caused too much air being trapped giving that "something stuck in the throat" feeling. Also, I did experience the frothing and it seemed to come from either eating too fast or too much or not chewing enough. See if that will help. I am 7 months post-op and don't have that problem anymore.
