Hi, Sherry. It depends upon the state you are in. Some insurance companies will require you to draw short-term leave for surgery and recovery. You can check with your HR department regarding short-term disability and/or the Family Medical Leave Act. If you are not comfortable speaking with your HR rep, does your insurance company have a web site? Many companies have a web site and you can usually look up your coverage options online. I hope this helps. :-)

I plan on using my short-term disability, and will NOT be telling my employer. Actually, according to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), we are not required to reveal to our employer the reason for our disability. A friend of mine told the disability company that she wanted the records marked "private" (which is your legally protected RIGHT), and the disability company contacted the HR department about the fact that she would be out. She told everyone at work she had gall bladder surgery. I'm not saying you shouldn't tell people at work that you're having the surgery, i'm just informing everyone if they don't want to, they really don't have to. However, you then have to perpetuate and "embellish" on whatever you decide to tell people.

Hi, I have United Health Care through my employer and was on short term disability for 6 weeks. The only thing is you have to be off 7 days before you can start using short term. So the first 7 days I used sick time that I had built up prior to surgery. open RYN 6/07/02 140#'s lost.Cathy

I drew mine after RNY and my TT/thigh lift. The main thing was putting down the medical problem that the surgery was trying to correct.
