Dr. Cobean and his staff at the Maine Medical Center Bariatric Center (a center of excellencce!) were outstanding. My original impression of kindness and professionalism has been verified. He is an excellent surgeon, highly recommended by my medical team and by other patients. After care is very important to the entire MMC Bariatric Center team. Holly, my nurse called me on my first day home. Catherine, the NP, called me on my 2nd day home. That was great timing because I had some questions and they were answered quickly and easily. I think they are all 10s on a 1-10 scale. Dr. Cobean has called a surgeon for me to help me resolve an issue with a tumor (it turned out to be benign) and then he called me personally to help me through the issues involved. It isn't one person or another on the team that is kind and caring, it is all of them. I'm so grateful. I even started a program elsewhere (not a center of excellence) and moved to Dr. Cobean's practice. They were very understanding. I have no negatives in a 3 year process to get my health good enough so I could have this surgery! They were with me every step of the way and remain at my side!

Dr. Cobean is a straight forward doctor. He does not sugar coat things to appease you. He is serious about his job as a surgeon and he is not afraid to let you know his impression of you. He is very strict and if you do not meet up to his expectations as a patient, then you may as well forget having surgery until you make the effort to take things seriously. rnrnI have been working at getting a surgery date for 3 years now. I wouldn't have it any other way. I did the serious work needed to be done in order to have this very serious surgery and I would be concerned if things were not so rigid. rnrnSurgery done on August 24th 2009

He was quite humorous.... seems to have a down to earth personality. I felt very comfortable around him which I'm usually not around male doctors!!!

Dr. Cobean is a wonderful doctor/surgeon. He's very professional but also a very down-to-earth person.rnrnI first met Dr. Cobean back in the late 1980's. My impression of him has not really changed.rnrnDr.Cobean's office staff, for the most part are very nice, helpful, encouraging, and professional. rnrnDr. Cobean and his bariatric surgery program staffrnstrongly emphasize aftercare after bariatric surgery!rnrnYes, absolutely! They have a very well structured aftercare program to my understanding.rnrnDr. Cobean addressed the risks of surgery very much to my satisfaction. I would rate Dr. Cobean overall, on a scale from 1-10, a \"8.5\". rnrnDefinitely both are a terrific combination! I believe Dr. Cobean has both these qualities.

Dr. Cobean looked very young, but definitely knows his business. I think the program at MMC is one of the best. The office staff has been very helpful trying to work around my travel plans. They tried to combine appointments when possible due to the distance I had to travel. Pre-care has been great, I feel much better prepared this time around.

Dr. Cobean requires that each patient attend a support group meeting conducted by his office before being considered for surgery. I attended about 2 weeks prior to my first appointment at Dr. Cobean's office. I saw Dr. Cobean at that support meeting and had NO idea what to think! He seemed very young and had a terrific sense of humor. He also seemed kind of off the cuff. I just wasn't sure what to think. After going to his office and attending an educational meeting, meeting with the nutritionist, the psychiatrist and having my before photo taken, I finally met Dr. Cobean personally. He is very matter of fact and knowledgable. He encourages questions and tells you a thousand ways that you better be sure that you know what you're getting into, then he tells you again what you are getting into! I respect him and think he is going to be a terrific person to know and work with from now until ????? rnUPDATE:rnDr. Cobean performed my RNY on March 5. He called me at home the night before surgery to insure that I didn't have any unanswered questions. He saw me again before the surgery to again make sure I was all set. It is easy to see that everyone respects Dr. Cobean and it's easy to see why. He was excellent and he made sure I was comfortable every step of the way! I would highly recommend him and his office to anyone considering WLS!rnUPDATE:rnAt approximately seven weeks post-op I developed some pretty bad stomach pain. I felt that this was due to swallowing a too big piece of meat and thought it might be stuck. I contacted Dr. Cobean and he evaluated my situation. I live about 100 miles from the hospital that I had my surgery at, so it was decided that I would get through the night, calling if it got any worse. I called Dr. Cobean in the morning to report no change. He had me go into the hospital for an endoscopy and found that I have an ulcer, not a blockage. Dr. Cobean was very reassuring and really showed concern for my mental health as well as my physical well being. He has me on the road to recovery and I am so grateful to have such a responsive professional working with me on this journey. rn

Dr. Roy Cobean was kind, factual, and went the extra mile. (He personally called me the night before surgery.) rnI am so pleased with his bedside manner as well as his surgical competence. My procedure was laparoscopic Roux en Y, including removing my gall bladder. I went into surgery at 3.30 pm on a Monday and I was home by 9:30, Tuesday morning. I was back at work a week later and credit him for my very rapid recovery.
