I'm sure I'll write more after I have my surgery next month, but so far I'm very glad I chose Dr. Avara. His office staff is wonderful (especially Valorie and Lisa who are very friendly and always return phone calls and emails!), and I felt very comfortable attending the info seminar and consultation. He seemed very laid-back when I first met him, not stuffy and rude like many surgeons I've met. I had a whole list of questions written down before I went to the seminar, and we sat down together and he answered all of them very patiently during the consultation. Surgery is scary and no doctor is perfect, but I feel very fortunate to have such a great surgeon (0% mortality rate with over 1000 surgeries performed) so close to home. I hope my post-op experience is as good as my pre-op has been.

Quick, to the point, very professional. Exactly what I was looking for! I would recommend him highly to anyone. My surgery went for over two hours and came out great!

My first impression of Dr. Avara was that he was friendly and accessible. He really seemed to care and that has only become more evident with time. The staff in his office is first class! I couldn't ask for a better \"family\"! That have been so helpful to me from the very beginning when I called to make my first appointment to right now, 13 months out of surgery. The whole practice is involved in every aspect of my treatment plan and has been since day one. I can't tell you the number of times that I've passed on the information given to me by his office to other band patients that received no information from their surgeon's offices. This practice is one of the best that I've ever come across and I would recommend them to anyone even thinking about having surgery.

I feel like Dr. Avara is truly confident in his practice and his believe in obesity being a disease. His offics staff is nice and supportive and knowledgeable. Having this said, after surgery at the hospital he didnt really spend but probably 2 seconds in the room at each visit (2) which was kinda disappointing. He didnt listen to my belly, look at it or anything. I have yet to get a 'check-up' call after coming home which I thought they mentioned that they would do. I also felt very rushed at my pre-registration on the Friday before at his office. I could hear them talking about running behind (I do understand that but...) and I was given soo much information in such a hurry that there was no way to process all of it right then. I still have appt cards, medicines that I start in 30 days, etc. that I have to get posted on the calender at work or I will surely forget. However when we drove back down there on Thursday for him to look at the hematoma--he was much more relaxed, alot nicer, felt more approachable etc. Lisa (office staff) always returns e-mails and I have gotten a returned call when I made a one time call to his office.Over all, I feel fortuanate to have found Dr. Avara and his staff.rn

Dr Avara is a Joyful person, Interested in his patients and my story,( he makes it about you) , and helping me.rnMy iimpression has not changed so far on Dr Avara, will add more after surgury. The office staff is the best ever and very helpful. From the front desk to the insurance person and the overall staff who inform you teach you and measure and weight you they are all very nice and treat you with respect. He's taken (just joking) He is trust worthy and well educated in what he does. Pluse he's good at it. He does not take chances, if your not right for the surgery he will let you know that too. He was my first visiture after surger, and He was there the first thing the next morning.I love the monthly meetings and the interaction with outher patients at these informative meeting. He does not play with risks he lay's them on the line and deal with each one that rasies it's ugley head from what I've heard from only a very few who have had to deal with unexpected risks. rn I feel that he is the best of all that I could chose from here in my neighbor hood. He is rated the highest and with 0% mortality rate, I dont' feel I could have asked for anything better in a care, educated and professional doctor or his staff. He is an all round great man to know.

Dr. Avara is one of the nicest Doctors I have met. I am set to have the Lap RNY with him on September 16. I am very gracious to him because I realize that he didn't have to accept me, especially considering I am a minor. I am 17 years old and have been battling obesity my whole life. He emphasizes aftercare very much, and wants to make sure you stick to the program. His staff is wonderful, especially Lisa Branam, and Valorie Barnes. I think I might have set a record for fastest meeting to surgery. My first meeting with them was August 5, 2008, and my surgery is September 16. rnrnrnNow that I have had my surgery, I must say that his bedside manner is not the best. I was in the hospital for 2 days after my surgery, and he checked on me one time. My uncle used Dr. Avara also, and he told me the same thing. If I had to rate him on a scale of 1-10, I would have to give him an 8. He was a good doctor, but the bedside manner was not the best.

After attending a Saturday seminar at Dr. Avara's Ocean Springs office, I was able to meet with him one-on-one. He is a very polite and kind-hearted man who treated me with respect. He believes that obesity is a \"disease\" and that we are now going to begin treating that \"disease\". He explained to me my options, his suggestions, and what was about to happen. He asked if I had any questions. I did not feel rushed, or pressured and I felt like he respected me and what I was doing. He reminded me a lot of my personal doctor. I would recommend this doctor to anybody considering any type of weight loss surgery.
