Baptist Hospital of Pensacola Hospital
The only thing I did not LOVE about Baptist was that they had a policy not allowing children under the age of 12 to visit, but my husband asked the nurses and they did allow my 3 year old to visit as long as she was in my room and well behaved. That policy though did stress me a little bit because I knew how hard it would be for my husband to find someone to watch her. But the staff were FABULOUS for working with him. I had no complications and the nurses and surgeon were sensitive, knowledgeable, and very compassionate when taking care of me.
My time as a patient at Baptist Hospital was a very good experience, considering I was in the hospital.
The private room was older but comfortable and clean. My sister was allowed (even recommended) to stay overnight with me and was provided her own blanket and pillows. The floor nurses were friendly and helpful. I didn't have to call them often - partly because I was doing well and partly because they checked in on me regularly. When I did call it didn't take long for them to respond.
My pain was managed well. The last night in the hospital my side really hurt from the drain but my nurse made some contacts and was able to get me the pain meds I needed.
The hospital is undergoing a LOT of renovations. They are currently building new operating rooms which just happened to be right outside my window, so there was a lot of construction noise. I knew this going in and it didn't really bother me.
The parking was tricky early in the morning for my check-in because we had to go through the ER. My family said finding parking was nearly impossible when they came to visit, but they just used the free valet service and it worked out fine.
Overall I think Baptist is a great place to have bariatric surgery - proficient OR teams, clean rooms, friendly nurses and accomodation to each patient's needs.
For me, it all comes down to the nursing staff. I was very happy with the nurse in peri-op, the nurse in pre and post op and the overnight nurse on the floor. On the other hand, the day nurse on the floor was a complete flake. She did not know how to use the bed, and so when she went to help me up for the first time, put me into a "crunch" position - great when you've just had abdominal surgery. She was not responsive when I asked for pain medication on schedule. I once waited for 55 minutes and once for over an hour and a half! Each time I had requested the meds at the time I was due, not early. Each time she ran in much, much later and said, "I'm sorry, I didn't forget you but..." There was one time when I had to wait to go to the restroom for half an hour and 3 calls. I had been unplugging my IV myself and going whenever I needed to, but the nurse had plugged it in behind the bed and I couldn't get to it. The hospital encourages you to have an adult stay with you but we couldn't because our family is out of the area and we have young children. I thought the suggestion was just for my comfort, but after my stay, it is clear that they expect your comfort person to be your care person.
My nurse was a flake (Tanya). She could not remember requests for pain meds, did not explain what I breathing exercises I was supposed to do, I had to tell her my I.V. was leaking because she never examined it, had to tell the nurses to empty my urine catch bag, was given boxes of dry cereal and milk the first morning post-op when I to be on a "full liquid" diet, my O-2 saturation levels were mysteriously higher on the chart on the door than they were when taken bedside... I would not go back to Baptist again.
I cannot say enough about the staff of Baptist. Fron the moment I checked in til the day I left everyone was helpful and kind.Everyone acted as though they loved where they were and I feel that translates into how they treat the patients.Everyone was eager to take time to answer any questions we had.Because of the accomodations my husband was able to stay with me the entire time which was also a great comfort.
