Boy Did I Have A Scare Last Night

About 3 am I woke up. Both my hands and lower arms were numb, I was really dizzy. I had trouble getting out of bet and stubbeled to the bathroom. When I put on the light it flashed before my eyes. Then I knew exactly what what happening. I was having a low blood sugar episod. Now before bed my blood sugar was pretty good 140 so I was able to cut back on insulin and didn't have to take very much at all. Even so at 3 am my blood sugar was 38! Now normal is 70-115 so this is really dangerous and at 38 lots of folks are even uncounscious. Luckily I keep Gloucose tablets on my vanity so I had to sit there and chew up sugar tablest. Usually I eat 4 but because it was SO low last night I ate 8. Then I stumbled back to bed and fell into a deep sleep and didn't budge until 9 this morning. Gosh I hate when this happens. One of the reasons I had this surgery is I was hopiing that my diabetes would go into remission. Well I'm not so lucky. While it's gotten much better, my sugar levels are in much better control and I am on much lower levels of insulin and off all oral meds, I still have to deal wity this and to be quite honest.....IT SUCKS By lunchtime my level is up to 96 and I'm feeling much better but ...shish....enough already. I go through this abouty three times a week but usually not this bad. Thanks for listening....I mean reading. Regards and hugs, Ronna

What an ordeal for you to go through, how very scary. You know, I was reading that they are doing RNY on diabetics (not obese people) in South America because of the positive effects it has on diabetes. Maybe as you lose more weight it will become more manageable and maybe even go away. God Bless, Jen

I can't believe your BS was 38! WOW! Is your doctor (endo) going to lower your medication as you lose weight? I'm glad you're feeling better, Ronna. Chele

We are constantly working on this but you know what they say.....it's the PRACTICE of medicine. I have cut way back on my long acting insulin. I only take 15U in the morning and now take 15U at bedtime. Use to be 50 and 40. And I take quick acting insulin at meal and bedtime depending on my blood sugar levels when needed. Yesterday I just had a really good low carb day and I worked out as well. Both have an effect on blood sugar. But yeah, 38 is way low Don't want to do that again anytime soon.

Ronna, I'm so glad you're feeling better now. I had no idea that blood sugar levels could affect you during your sleep. That really is scary. Kathy
