Oh So Sick! What was I thinking???

Okay, I'm admitting my stupidity here in public. I'm nine months out of surgery and to this point I have never tested my sugar capacity. I never ate anything with more than 10-12 grams of sugar. I religiously looked at labels everywhere I went and if I couldn't "guesstimate" it, I didn't eat it. I didn't know my limits because I never tested them. I've stuck to the rules most of the time and have felt okay. I ate a cookie today. One of those specialty, as big-as-the-palm-of-your-hand loaded with chocolate chips and nuts cookies. And subsequently got the racing heart, the sweats, the headache and the nausea. Oh, the nausea. I've no idea how much sugar was in it, but make no mistake -- I won't do that again.

You know I have tested all the limits of sugar and Never dumped. I sometimes wish I did so that it would teach me a lesson. I am sorry this happened but I think that we learn from our mistakes and you won't do it again

Yep, we sure do. Every time I describe my surgery to someone in the real world (those who actually ask about it), I use the phrase, "Surgically-induced behavior modification" and I follow it up by saying that the surgery makes us eat like we should be eating anyway. Which, apparently doesn't include big chocolate chip cookies. LOL - but I knew that already. Just know it much better today.

And I bet it wasn't even a good as it looked. Well at least you now what dumping is like. I dumped on sf chocolate from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Company. I ate 2 pieced and boy I was a mess. So you have to watch that stuff too. I guess the sugar alchohol does me in as well.

Hey Ronna, You're right -- it did look much better than it tasted. Sometimes I will "dump" on the alcohols, but it's not really a dump so much as it is just a little upset stomach and usually some loose stools (which is handy at times since I've suffered from chronic constipation - TMI - since surgery).

Sorry to hear about that but in a way it is good to know how far you can really go with the sugar. I wonder sometimes whether or not to push my limits but will be disappointed if I don't dump after a certain point as that would open up a new can of worms for me to deal with. Anyways, hope your tummy is feeling better. Karen S.

Good morning, Karen! I still don't know how far I can go, since the cookie was brought in with some box lunches that we had catered for a meeting -- no nutritional info. However, I'm sticking with my own rule of 10-12 gm per serving since that's worked for me for 9 months. I AM feeling much better this morning. This happened at work yesterday afternoon and all I can say is thank heavens I have a private office. LOL-- I was able to close the door and stretch out over a couple of chairs until the worst of it passed. The worst, lingering part of it though was teh overwhelming tiredness that hit after the physical symptoms went away. I was so very tired I barely had energy to trek the distance to my parking garage.

Sorry to hear about your dumping experiance. I still have not tasted anything with sugar. I'm afraid to. I dump from things with lots of fat and from that experiance, I don't want another dumping episode. I hope you feel better soon. Kay

Thanks, Kay. I've gotten a little upset tummy from some things in the past (usually the high fat stuff and the sugar alcohols) but nothing like yesterday. The worst of it actually past pretty quickly (maybe 45 min to an hour?), but the fatigue stayed with me for hours. Hey -- I haven't forgotten the winter clothes for you -- I just haven't made it all the way out to my garage for more than the minute it takes to park the car in the evenings. I'll try to send them on their way withint the next couple of weeks if you still want them. Lisa

I can eat sugar anything---sometimes I WISH I sugar dumped, but nope----my body welcomes the stuff! The only time I felt a little off was when I drank a choc-PB smoothie from a juice place----you know those things are loaded with sugar--but still, it was a very minor reaction---sigh---- Cathy
