I'd like some clarification about the whole drain tube subject. What factors determine who and who doesn't have a drain tube placed?

I asked about this at my appt this morning. My interpretation is that it is a surgeon preference and the amount of inflammation your individual body produces. My particular surgeon does not often use drains or so they say. I did not have one, just my 6 little punctures.

My was the decision of the surgeon. Everyone gets one until at least 1 week post-op. The last 3 days, it really got on my nerves. The skin around it was getting sensitive. I never even felt a thing when they removed it either. My last 3 staples they removed was the only thing I felt. I did also dose up with 30 cc of lortab one hr before my 1 week post-op visit. That may be why I didnt feel to much. Just ask your Dr what normal practice is.

I didn't have to have any tubes. I was told that drains are only used in open procedures. None the less, I was grateful not to have had any! ~Teri~

I had a tube with mine, which was lap. I had it for 1 week, hated it, it was the main thing that hurt that whole week. When I had my galbladder out 19 years ago, it was open and I only had the tube for 4 days, the days I was in the hospital. Guess it's as they say, depends on the doc.

Greetings, I woke up with a tube and they drained it every few hours. It was nasty. I did not go home wiht it though. The surgeon came in and said that he was going to take it out so I could go home. I would have been crazy going home wiht that. I guess God knew that cause he had em take it out. LOL Good luck to all !

Thank you all for your answers. I had my gall bladder out lap about 10 years or so ago and didn't have drains then, either.
