Problems with drinking protein shakes
I am 5 days post op and I took a tiny sip of a protein shake, and I believe I got the dumping syndrome. I felt sick for hours. I drank water afterwards to try and make things better. I have an appt. with my dr. on Monday, but do you think I need protein before then? The connection between my pouch and intestines is very tiny, so maybe that's what's causing it. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem, or has any suggestions.
Amy
Hi Amy,
Sorry to hear that you're having challenges. They did not have me on protein for 9 days post op so I'd say you can go without it. Alternatively, isopure is all liquid and 40g of protein per bottle, available at the vitamin shoppe. But definately check with your doctor, even give them a call before your appt. good luck!
Hey Amy
Sorry that you're having a hard time with shakes. It was hard for me to drink anything the first week after surgery. Everything seemed to make me nauseous (sp). Even now, the shakes are still nasty. One thing to look for is the amount of sugar grams and make sure there's not alot. One that I have managed is the Glucerna chocolate. There's 10 g protein, with 7 g of sugar. Some of the other shakes have a lot more sugar which could be problem. I am trying to get my protein in with foods (my Dr. allows soft proteins now), but it's still difficult to do. One thing I did find loaded with protein is the South Beach Bars w/19 g protein~~if you could tolerate that now.
Wish you the best,
Lisa

HI AMY--MY SURGERY WAS ON 1/16 AND ON 1/19 ONCE I WAS HOME AND TOLD I COULD START PROTEIN DRINKS I TRIED 1 OZ OF THE LIQUID ISOPURE WHICH I LOVE IN ALPINE PUNCH--WELL MOMENTS LATER I FELT DIZZY SWEATY AND NAUSEOUS--IM ASSUMING IT WAS THE DRINK HOWEVER I TRIED IT AGAIN 3 DAYS LATER AND I AM FINE--ALONG WITH THAT ONE PROFECT PROTEIN HAS BEEN GOOD FOR ME AS WELL ALONG WITH ISOPURE POWDER---DEFINATELY CHECK THE SUGAR CONTENT IN THE ONE YOU TRIED--GOOD LUCK
I have been drinking Isopure mixed with crystal lite. Isopure comes in 20oz bottles in different fruit flavors. I really like the Alpine punch mixed with leomonade. It has 40g of protein in it. Takes me a whole to to drink it but I get ihn my fluid along with all that protein too.
GNC carries it.
regards and hugs,
Ronna

I was having similar issues with any protein drinks---even the low lactose ones. The CRNP in my surgeon's office told me to take a lactaid pill ( I break it into 3-4 little pieces) before each liquid meal (protein shake, cream soups etc). So far it has helped a great deal with the discomfort i had been having. Its not 100% pain free for me yet but I am not yet two weeks post op and anticipate things will only get better with time!
I suggest you try the Lactaid pills ( I got the wlamart brand and it was lots less expensive).
Karen
