Getting Enough????

I've read posts about people having an easy time eating, but does anyone else feel like they're not getting enough? I have no appetite and no hunger, so I could go all day without having anything bu****er. Most days it's mid-afternoon before I realize I haven't had anything. I have become lactose intolerant since the surgery, and even with lactaid pills I'm still having trouble finding a protein shake that goes down well. Even if I make them with milk my body just rejects it, and I feel sick for hours. I'm supposed to be on pureed foods, but I have no desire, because I've had trouble with applesauce going down. I've called the dr. and they don't seem concerned. I'm losing weight like crazy, which also kind of worries me. With my lack of desire to eat it's hard to put anything in my mouth. Anyone else with this problem? Amy

Many times I don't have the desire to eat, or things just don't taste good. As far as your protein drink, have you tried any that aren't in shake form like the premade Isopure or the nectar? ::hugs:: Cyndi

Cyndi, I love the Isopure protein drinks. They are about the only way I can get my protein in, and my doc said I can count it towards my fluid intake as well. I have good days and bad days. Today, I didn't get enough protein, fluid or vitamins in. Oh well, as Miss Scarlett O'Hara said, "Tomorrow is another day!" Sandy L

Hi Amy, Well, I feel your pain. My little pouch is never hunger anymore. And that I am thankful for. I read the post were people are always starving and Im glad Im not one of them. I have trouble eating in the morning so I start with my liquids first thing and then I eat something around 11 or 12. I just had to but myself on a schedule and make sure I eat 3 meals a day. But its something I have to work hard at. Good luck, Kristi

Hi Amy, Have you tried the Isopure in the premixed bottles? No milk at all and they have 40g of protein in each 20oz bottle. Don't know what I would have done without them. They come in several fruit flavors and I mix them with Crystal Lite Lemonade. It goes down pretty easy! Regards and hugs, Ronna

Yes I have tried those Isopure premixed drinks, my husband's getting some more as we speak. They make me burp though, but it's better than the protein shakes. Thanks Ladies!!

Hey Amy I understand how you feel. I eat because I have to. I have absolutely no apitite. I could drink water, SF Koolaid and eat SF popsicles and be happy. I'm also on pureed foods right now and have been having a 4 oz protein shake for breakfast and luch. I have to make myself drank them. For dinner I aim for a 1/4 Cup of tuna but only eat a couple of bites. Its weird because before surgery I had a HUGE apitite. I'm also afraid I'm not eating enough. I will talk to my surgeon on Thursday about it. I'm sure this will pass. Good Luck Kay

Like Kristi I am not hungry in the morning and get thru my liquids in the AM. The Isopure is great for me, I love the apple melon one and then dont feel so pressured to eat if I dont feel like it. I can say I get slightly hungry or better yet, I occassionally feel a slight shift in my blood sugar (not diabetic) and know I need a bite of cheese or something. My eyes and brain are still bigger than my stomach but I'm learning and working to get them in the same focus. My dog is probably gaining weight from the scraps I end up with, I never had leftovers before.....

Yes - I had Lap RNY on 1/23, and until yesterday, I was eating about 2 tblsp. per meal and quite happy with that. I had been reading the posts about people eating 1/2 cup of pureed per meal and measured out a half cup of cottage cheese and couldn't believe how much less I had been eating. So, worried I wasn't eating enough, I ate the 1/2 cup per meal yesterday, and now I'm worried that I'm eating too much! I'm confused - could go all day without eating, and since I hardly ever feel any hunger it seems wrong to eat - you know, pre surgery, I was starving by meal time every day, so not to be hungry is such a blessing it seems wrong to eat then! I think today I will eat less again - I feel better about myself that way. Sylvia Day of surgery 270/current 250/goal 150

The true measurement is the protein count. If you are not getting the protein your doctor indicated your body may not lose weight as the body's in starvation mode. Protein burns fat - and carbs keep your muscles strong so both are important. Look at your protein intake and balance that with hunger. Also know that soft foods and liquids go thru the pouch much more quickly. As you have denser foods you'll fill up with less and it will stay there longer. Protein is also the slowest and last to burn - sugar than carbs then protein then fat.
