Eating too much?
Hi ladies,
Hope that you are all having I nice day. I read the menu post by Kay (and now Pixie) every day. I can't help but think that I eat so much more than you guys. I read about how some of you can only eat a few bites and others are vomiting daily. I have not thrown up even once. I can eat about 5 oz of food at a time and I am not talking about soup or yogurt.
My Dr. says that this is normal but if I judge by what I read here, how can it be? Is my pouch bigger than other pouches? I see posts like this one sometimes on the main board so maybe this is a normal fear...
I would love to have the opinions of my Jan family. Thanks!
You know what's weird? When I read the "What's on your menu today?" posts, I think that on some days, I eat so much more than everyone else. I don't think it has anything to do with pouch size though, because mine is only 2ccs. I am supposed to eat 6-8 times a day, which doesn't always happen....but I do eat my allotted 1/2 cup of whatever.
I dunno! If your doc says you are normal, than I wouldn't worry!

First, keep in mind that when people say "one bite of this, two bites of that" well, a bite size is *very* relative. What maybe a bite for you could be a nibble to someone else and visa versa. Know what I mean?
But, 5 oz seems on the bigger portion side of things, but perhaps your stomach/pouch is naturally more forgiving, or perhaps your pouch is bigger then everyones.
If your doctor says that is normal, then you are doing fine. Everyones WLS is somewhat catered to their lifestyle and personal medical information... so as long as you are doing what your doc says, then you should be ok!
Your Dr. knows what size he made your pouch, so if he says it's fine, then there really isn't anything to worry about. Also, how long do you take to eat? If it is over 10min. then your pouch is emptying while you are eating. Are you still loosing at least 2 lbs a week on the average? Are your food choices good and your calorie and protein in the range you should be eating? These are probubly more important than how much you can eat.
Everyone is different. I just had my nutritionist appointment for my 7 weeks post op. She tells me that I should be able to eat between 1/2 - 1 cup of food per meal. Sometimes just a bite or two is enough and then today, I ate 6 oz for lunch, but now I can't even think about eating anything for dinner.
My nutritionist says this is the time to learn about your new pouch and what you are able to eat and not eat. Learn as much as you can now, because after the "honeymoon" stage is over - you've lost a lot of your excess weight - it's going to be tougher.
I'm kindof like Elsa - some days I can eat 5ozs and some days I can hardly eat anything - it varies so much from day to day, and what it is. I have the same fear though that I am eating too much, but then the next day I read posts and think I'm not getting enough calories and that is slowing my weight loss! I dunno. This can really be a bit of trial and error, eh?

Hi Valerie,
I had my surgery on 1/31/06. I haven't vomitted yet either. I can eat about 5 oz per meal as well. According to my surgeon and the nutritionists that the doctors' group works with I am allowed to eat 3 meals a day and 2-3 protein snacks. They say that anything between 1/4 cup to 3/4 cup per meal is considered okay with them. So according to my doctor we are normal. My average calorie intake is 700-800 calories per day. I see this as a good thing. I feel so lucky not to be vomitting and feeling nauseous all of the time. I hope I continue to be so fortunate. Good luck with your journey.
Dana
I am so happy to be reading your post. I had surgery on 1/24 and have yet to vomit. I have only overfilled my pouch 3 times, once very early on with yogurt and medicine and then twice more with some ground sirloin. (Since then I have laid off the sirloin till later).
Anyway, I started to think there is something wrong with me: I can eat up to a cup of food (if it is like yogurt with banana smashed in it or cottage cheese with peaches or soup) If it is more heavy and less likely to drain I can eat up to at least half a cup. I thought for sure I was already messed up. The other day even my husband was amazed at what I seemed to be able to eat. Although I tried to justify it by telling him how long it took for me to eat it. (boiled chicken thigh 3oz and mashed potatoes 4 oz - maybe more, took 45 minutes)
I still am not sure if I am "normal,"
this is just my issue with the surgery --feeling as though I have failed already. But it does ease my mind to know that there are others of us out there with an easier time.
Thanks for posting.
