First, let me say that I have my surgery on Tuesday 1/17/2006 in Nashville so I feel your anxiety. One of the most helpful things I did when preparing for my surgery was to attend support group meetings. From your profile I can see that you are a very supportive person in your volunteerism so you know how important it is to be surrounded by people who have been there and done that.
I am married to a professional worrier and we produced a daughter who worries. (Luckily, our son is a lot like me - fly by the seat of his pants!) One of the calming techniques I use is deep breathing. On the inhale I say, "I am" and on the exhale, "in God's hands."
