Did all of you get morphine pumps in the hospital?

I did not! I asked for an epidural to control post op pain and I was SO glad. I'd still be asleep if I had done the morphine! That stuff stays in my system forever! Even the epidural made me have halucinations and made my nose itch, but overall it was a good trade. Got me up and walking quick and painlessly, which was great! Joy

But had you not had the epidural you would have had morphine? I'm just wondering if morphine is "automatic". I didn't ask my surgeon about this.

The anesthesiologist made the call. I did not get a chance to meet or discuss with the anesthesiologist until in the prep room on the day of surgery, but she came in and we discussed it all thoroughly before they gave me anything. Joy

It is my understanding the most Dr's now have in in their post op orders to have people on Morphine pumps is they are not allergic. I had a pump and used it often for the first few hours until I got things under control, then I only had to use it periodically. The took it away the next day after I passed my swallow test as I could take liquid pain meds. Even then, I wasnt using any of it because I wasn't in pain. I wasn't comfortable, but I wasn't in pain. Finally as I was watching TV on morning at 2:00 a.m a sage old nurse talked me into trying some just to relax and it made a huge difference. She later explained that while I may not be in pain, taking meds can only help in the healing process.

I believe it is standard protocal for most hospitals. It is a good thing. I also asked for a pain pill the night they took me off the morphine pump. I was not in any pain but it was hard getting to sleep in there. YOu will need all the sleep you can get. LaDonna -20lbs
