Post-Op: Vomitting and diarrehea? (sorry but have to ask)
I have to take a little survery here.
If possible could the marchers from the first 2 weeks post on this?
I have had many bouts with the big "d" (diarrehea) since day 3 ish.
My dietician says it is common since you are losing at such a rapid pace, and that sometimes you can even 'see the fat' I know this is graphic..sorry Ok so I can attest to that...regularly.
Today...after having my protein shake for b-fast, and a popsicle mid morning, I felt sick to my stomach..and yup..I did..I vomitted. I was so afraid! I felt better afterwards, but now my belly aches terribly.
Just curious if I am alone in this?
I am struggling to get all the protein in, but doing my best..I feel so full all the time. Now I sure dont want to push anything at all. So I am just focusing on the water/clear liquids and trying to get thru this 'vomit' phase. It wasnt pretty..but I survived.
Anyone else? It would help to know if others are going thru this as well~
Sorry to be so graphic!
Kris
Had you eaten something different or in a different way before you vomited? (faster, thicker, etc?)
Vomitting becomes a problem if it is so severe you are tearing yourself up, or if you cannot keep down fluids and nutrients.
Diarreah seems to be par for the course, at least for me. It does not seem to be severe enough to leave me dehydrated, so I just accept it as part of the way things are right now. I have not had any vomiting. I'm sure it would be frightening.

I have had diarhea off and on since surgery - it is normal - I was told to take an imodium (over the counter) after each episode. Continue drinking fluids. The protein drink could have been to sweet or sweetened with splenda depending on what it was - I was a little nauseated after drinking atkins shake and will watch for that.
Vomitting - I
while still in the hospital - I took to large of a bite of cling peach slice and that was all she wrote. After vomitting I slept most of the night. You are not alone with either issue.

I was more or less with loose stools that didn't give me much notice from Day 3 on. My doctor attributes it a lot to the Fleet's we drank and also the other factors others have mentioned. Finally, today, about Day 11, I had an almost normal bowel movement. It would be indelicate, I suppose, to attach balloons to the mailbox for THAT, but I was tempted.
I had intense diarhhea after eating some (allowed) low sugar yoghurt. OTOH, I was starting to run a fever (see below). I've decided to go with Lactaid until I'm over my complication. It's not worth feeling sick while I sort it out.
I threw up once when I had to toss back some vile oral antibiotic. The doctor did not want me throwing up like that and was going to rehospitalize me for intravenous antibiotic (I had turned up with a kidney infection and high fever two days after being discharged.) A saint on another board gave me a recipe for ice milk with Splenda syrup and lactaid that saved me. I've got several days of antibiotic to go and am so thankful I didn't have to go back.
If I do not do everything extreeeeeemely slowly, I can feel nauseated or like it's coming back up. It is really, really hard to retrain yourself even though I intellectually understand. Generally, if I eat slowly enough to burp, then all is well.
I do feel better every day and am now up to 3 meals of about 1/2 Cream of Wheat OR strained cream soup + 1/4 c. applesauce + 1/4 c. jello or consomme.
I expect to be released to something more like what we do long term, with 3 meals per day of 1 1/2 oz. protein (esp. fish or very moist meat) that you chew millions of times_ + purreed veggies + some other stuff about 1/4 c.
I have been warned that, once you start eating your protein, you feel much more full than you can believe when on soft foods only. My doctor says do not drink in combination with eating and resume drinking 1 hr. after the meal. A lot of people seem to have trouble with protein drinks at first and then love them later. So I am hoping I will like eggs.
Hope that helps. I know I make progress every day but it's not the fastest thing in the world, that's for sure. But then I read posts from those still waiting and am just so grateful to be moving in a real way toward feeling great instead of waiting to do the thing to later feel great, if you follow me.
