Back among the living (sort of)

Hi all. I haven't been able to get to the computer since I got home, until today. I finally had the strength to crawl up the stairs. My surgery was scheduled for March 4th at 7:30. When I got there, they had a really hard time finding a vein. CAN YOU SAY OUCH!!!) Anyway, they finally found one, and started prepping me for the OR. They gave me this breathing treatment stuff that numbed my mouth and throat and tasted like doggy doo-doo. Felt very weird. Almost like I couldn't breathe. So they take me back to the OR, thinking they're going to send a scope down my throat in order to intubate me. Boy were they wrong! I was still gagging on it. (I have a VERY strong gag reflex!) So they put me to sleep. From what I was told, it took them a really long time to intubate me and to find more veins, and an arterial line. They were putting the arterial line in to keep a better check on my blood pressures, blood sugars, and other stuff I don't know about. Finally about 2 hours after they were supposed to start surgery, they finally did. I spent the next 2 1/2 days in the icu, just barely conscious. Finally on Saturday afternoon they sent me up to a regular room. I had the leak test and passed, and was on my way to clear liquids. Boy was I happy to have some water! So much so, that I drank too much and put myself in some major pain! I learned that lesson really quick. Sip, sip, sip....that's my motto now! They were going to keep me a little longer than usual anyway due to a severe clotting problem that I have. Well, on Monday, I developed a blood clot in my one good leg that I have. What a pain! Litterally, and figuratively! So, I didn't get out of the hospital then until this past Thursday afternoon. I'm doing ok now. My leg still hurts to stand on, but it's a little stronger and doesn't feel like I'm going to fall from it being so weak. The stomach is good. I have some nausea, but it's not too bad. I'm starting to suspect that I may be lactose intolerant. I love dairy products! Guess I'll just go get some Lactaid! Well, I'm glad everyone is doing ok that I've read so far. I know I missed out on a lot. Could someone send me a brief synopsis of how everyone is doing so far? I've thought about each and everyone one of you as I journeyed to get this far. Not sure when I'll be able to climb the steps to get back on the computer again, but hopefully it'll be soon! Take care everyone! -Naomi PS: When they weighed me on Sat. afternoon, I'd lost 12 pounds by then! Can't wait to go to the doctor's to find out how much more I'd lost!

Naomi, So glad to hear you are home. Sounds like you had quite an adventure! Hopefully the lactose intolerence will be temporary. Try Lactaid or some such thing or there is a new Carb Smart milk substitute that I hear is good. I hope each day brings improvements for you! Joy
