Little friend came and I'm tearful

Hi everyone. I had surgery on 3/11/04. I had lap RNY. I've done wonderfully physically. I've had very little pain with the exception of being bloated with gas which I try to burp up, but that does hurt some. I went to the doctor yesterday and he said it was from drinking too much. He said that we don't need as much as we've been taught and that our bodies adjust to what we give it and that when I get thirsty my body will tell me. He said I just need to listen to it. So, I sip, sip, sip and generally don't feel bad any more, but if I do, I just don't sip until it passes and then sip a little more. Its working pretty well. I did start my period yesterday and am very tearful. I've cried a good part of today and a couple of times yesterday. Have any of you went through this? I'm hoping it's post surgery blues, and that it won't come back as strong next month and hoping that it won't stay after my period stops. It worries me a little. I hate being out of control. I cry over NOTHING! My hubby is very attentive and caring and wants to do anything he can and hopes he did nothing wrong (he didn't). I knew I'd probably go through this, as when I had my 2 children I went through it. I just hope it goes away soon. If not, I'll be calling my doctor to see what can be done short term. Any words of encouragement from anyone would help. Let me hear from you. My doctor let me start some apple sauce yesterday and I also got some baby food fruit. I ate some prunes mixed with apples. It was good. Very little though. I drink between 16-20 oz a day, but he said my body will adjust, and it does seem to be doing ok with it. Can't wait to be able to eat a slice of cheese or cottage cheese. I'm a little tired of the sweet tasting stuff we can have. Broth gets old fast. Mostly I just drink, haven't been doing popcicles or jello much. Let me hear from you all on what you're doing. Dena (different from Dena S)

Hi Dena!!! I have researched what you're feeling and basically I have found that fat cells store estrogen and when you have the surgery and disrupt their happy homes they get evil and make ya sad and weepy.. or even angry... GOOD news... when you're done dumping estrogen you'll feel so much better and it does help when you're on a more solid diet... So hang in there it only gets better from here!!!!!! Thanks for the reply Kathy. Yeah, I read that before surgery today too. I guess it will be a while before I dump all the estrogen huh? Well, if I feel like this after the solids start (probably next week), then I'm going to get some hormone help somewhere. I don't intend to feel like this all the time. Thanks so much for responding. No wonder I'm an emotional wreck! You are saying that WLS causes my fat cells to dump estrogen, and since I had a hysterectomy at the same time I'm not making any more! Wahhh! Joy (There's nothing wrong, so shut up and don't ask again!)

Dena, Ihave heard getting emotional is very common after surgery and especially with your period that can add on to it. I, too, have been emotional. The other day I was changing the channel on TV and saw some old men playing french music and I just cried my eyes out because it reminded me of my grandfather. I have never done this. So...you aren't the only one..Oh yeah and I was on my period too so there Bethany AKA Da Offishal Riddler and Bertha 14 Days into NewPouch and feeling great! -28 lbs!!!! Dena - Nice to meet another one of us (Dena/Dina's)! I don't know about you but when I was in school there was never anyone else who had my name but now we're everywhere! LOL! I had surgery a day before you and had the same situation with the burping feeling. I figured it was water going down hard though, but I've also been having acide reflux at night from water!!! ??? My period is also starting today. Happens every time I start a diet or lose weight - about a week after I start losing. Pretty much on schedule, that's for sure. Cathy is right - it's the estrogen dumping out of your system. Your hormones are effected seriously by weight loss. Good and bad though. I dread this period because my periods are not regular and lately I've been going ON my period forever if I don't go on progesterone. One was over 3 months long. Ugh! Here's the really fun part though: I have to travel on a plane tomorrow to come home. So, do me a favor huh? When those hormones get out of hand and you start crying, think of me and shed a few for me as well huh? Dina ---different from Dena and Dena

I've cried on planes before. The stewardess offered me a free drink if I would quit depressing the other passengers! Joy

Dear Dena, Joy, and the rest of you Marchers! I cried every day after I came home, and I thought I was losing my mind. My sister, who is a nurse anesthetist, told me that I was mourning a loss, that is, the loss of my stomach. It sounded weird to me, but it makes sense now, looking back. Hormones, too, play a big part of our crying jags, ladies. I had to go off my HRH while recuperating for the first week post-op, and nearly drove my poor husband insane. Luckily, I am back on my daily Estratest and am doing much better. So, it is NORMAL to cry after surgery, whether or not you are having a period or not. I like Joy's stewardess story: what can they offer us now, instead of a drink? Rita
