Acid reflux post surgery????
2 nights in a row I have had acid reflux (I have a hiatal hernia) from having water before bed. Now it happens long enough after I go to bed that the water shouldn't be hanging around. I mean, it goes right down anyway, and there isn't much water I've had anyway (usually a sip or so).
The thing is, it's not really bad, but ti does slightly burn. It's not on fire like it was before, but it's weird because I never got it from drinking anything before....it was only eating the wrong kinds of food (carbs) and too much.
Has anyone else experienced this at all? I'm kind of curious what is happening because I would think I shouldn't have anything coming up. I'll see my surgeon today to get my tube and some staples removed, but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone already dealt with it....

Gee, toots, I'm sorry to hear that. Mine disappeared with surgery. BUT - my surgeon has us on Pepcid (or in my case, Prevacid, since I already had it at home) for 2 months post-op to aid in the healing of the pouch. That may have something to do with it.
I have heard from MANY tha****er no longer 'agrees' with them post-op. In my case, water disagreed with me PRE-op: it aggrevated my stomach acids something fierce. Flavored waters are about all I'm drinking right now ****d Botanicals, Propel, Pulse, Fruit-2-0, etc) -that may or may not have something to do with it - ?

Dina,
I have had acid reflux for 15 years. After my surgery on 3/01/04, I did get a little reflux twice in the hospital because they didn't give me my Prevacid medication. I resumed the Prevacid after I got home and haven't had any trouble since then. When I asked my Internist, she said to keep taking it for now until I lost more weight. My surgeon's office told me to keep taking the drugs for at least a month. I read an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer dated in January 2004 and it indicated that acid reflux would get worse after surgery (!!) but I had been told by my surgeon's office that I could expect to hopefully get off of meds. So now I, too, am confused! What did your surgeon tell you?
I see my surgeon Thurs, 3/18 and I will ask him, too.

Well, of all stupid things, I forgot to ask him. I got so consumed with talking about other things, I forgot all about that. (That's my ADD without meds for you!)
Oh well, I think what everyone else has said here makes a lot of sense. I have some Pepcid at home, so maybe I'll take some for awhile.

I didnot have any reflux before surgery, but since have had a little with water as well, and some eating, but my surgeon put me on 2 tsp liquid zantac (tastes just like peppermint schnapps) 2 times daily. That has really helped. He said that I could expect to have a little problems with reflux while healing and especially if I laid down too soon after taking something in. I agree with Joy things seem to take much longer to go down and get where they are suppose to be going since surgery. Hope your Dr was helpful. Janelle
