Heightened smell and taste
I was just telling someone a little while ago that my "Nicotrol Inhalers" sure don't taste the same anymore. They used to have a menthol/minty taste (when you "inhale" it, it turns into a vapor that your buccal membranes absorb, but you don't inhale it into your lungs, you just kind of taste it in your mouth), but now they're FLAT and it's a brand new prescription (so it's not like they're "old" or anything). I've only used 'em a couple of times since post-op, and I fear I may have a full prescription sitting here for some time to come. But the GOOD news is that I'm not only smoke-free now, I'm also ~99.9% nicotine free, too!
They're just not 'working' for me anymore, PTL!!!
The BIGGEST change in taste is my fibromyalgia meds. I did a pre-op "test run" of smooshing 'em and putting 'em into Key Lime Iced Botanicals, "shooting" it and "chasing" it with more Key Lime I.B. OMG, I almost died. I kept it down, but I dry-heaved for a VERY long period of time (an hour plus?) afterward and my sides actually hurt the next day from dry-heaving for so long. Pre-op, if one of those pills even TOUCHED a buccal membrane when I took it, I'd taste it for hours afterward - I figure they have to be a salt-base 'cuz it was so NASTY. Well, when Dr. Wonderful told me to go back on 'em a couple of days post-op ('cuz my back was kicking up and it was my normal flare-up kind of pain...), I was really disappointed, but I knew what to expect from my pre-op experiment. So I smooshed 'em (I have a pharmaceutical pill crusher that pulverizes 'em to a fine powder), mixed 'em into a souffle cup of Key Lime Iced Botanicals, and "shot" and "chased" 'em...NOTHING!! I mean, I could taste them A LITTLE, but they didn't gag me or make me wretch like they did pre-op. That's one MAJOR change I'm grateful for. I don't know how I'd get 'em down if I had to go thru what I did pre-op...
I'm sure as I go along, I'll find more stuff that's changed, but so far, those are the two things I've 'discovered'. Oh, also that anything cranberry-raspberry SUX and tastes like cough medicine.

Hi Sally,
I have noticed the same thing! On the way home from the hospital my dad stopped and got him some lunch from McDonald's. I was a little worried that it would make me crave some FF but the minute he got the bag into the car all I could taste in my mouth was grease.
Just from the smell! I was so amazed. I had a lady in my support group who told me that she does this. But she told me this before I had my surgery and I thought she was just being a little weird. OMG! She was SO right! I called her up and told her that and she laughed with me about it. I'm amazed at the changes in my smell and taste.
I'm also having a bit of an odor problem. It doesn't matter how many times a day I put on deoderant. I still stink! I hate that!
Well, that's my two cents worth! I hope you are having a great weekend!

HI Carrie... If you wanna quit smelling..... hold your nose!!!
sorry I love that corny joke...
After all you have been thru it's no wonder your body is rebelling a little bit. This too shall pass.. Hang in there.. You're still one bad a** babe!!

My sense of smell is normally pretty muted due to chronic allergies. I came home from the hospital and picked up on all kinds of things. I was nauseated loading my husbands salad bowl into the dishwasher because of the viniagrette dressing smell. Everything tasted extra salty or extra sweet. It seems kind of back to normal the last week or so, so I think the effect may be temporary. Weird, huh?
