very disappointed
I am so down on myself, today I am 13 days out and have only lost 12 1/2 pounds. I know I should not have weighed my self but old habits die hard. I know that comparing myself to others is the wrong thing to do but...... Anyway I am drinking at least 64 ounces of water and getting in 50 - 60 grams of protein a day. What is happening??? Deep down I know that the weight has to come off but when??? What else can I do to help the weight come off. I read all these post ops and people lose many many more pounds. Any advice is appreciated.........
Hi Marcy,
It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Try to get some more protein if you possibly can (my doc is a little different on the protein, he wants 80 to 100 grams per day). What is happening is that your body composition is changing. You know the saying muscle weighs more that fat does? Well, keeping in mind that a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle, that pound of muscle takes up MUCH less space!!!!
That demon scale may not be moving as fast as you would like it too, but maybe you are losing inches of fat that you are not focusing on.
Hugs.

I am 16 days out and have only lost 15 lbs. and I to am getting about 50 to 60 grams of protien. I think we are doing the right things and I will not over stuff myself that is how I got this way and I am staying on my path until the Dr. tells me otherwise. Keep up the good work try on something you could not get on before that will tell you that you are truly losing. Sarah T.

You are eating and drinking well. You did not say if you are walking, but if not, that will help.
You are losing about a pound a day. That is as much as I am losing. If you keep it up, in a year you will lose 365 lbs!!! There is nothing wrong with that loss. It is about what I am losing too. And I stalled comepletely last week, which is also part of the normal process.
The important thing is that you are moving in the right direction--PERMANENTLY!

Marcy,
There are so many variable in the weight loss picture. Your metabolism, your starting BMI, your exercise, etc. Everybody loses at a different rate.
My first suggestion, and most important, is to not be hard on yourself. If you are doing everything you're supposed to do (protein first, not drinking with meals, and exercising you cannot help but lose the weight AND build muscle mass)
As Joy pointed out, you don't mention exercise in your post. I think you should be walking as much as you are able to but don't tire yourself out too much. My surgeon fully expects me to be walking 1 to 2 miles daily by my 6 week check up. Now, you are just 2 weeks so that much is not to be expected.
Be patient with yourself, follow your food and exercise plan to the tee, and you will do wonderful. DO NO COMPARE YOURSELF TO ANYONE ELSE!
With this surgery you now have a tool that will help you be HEALTHY. It won't happen overnight, but if you use it correctly, it will happen.
Hang in there Marcy.

First, don't be disappointed. Don't do that to yourself. Look at the glass "half full", not "half empty" - you've lost ~1 lb per day. That's MOST excellent!!
Secondarily, we all lose at different rates. I was told from the start NOT to expect to lose as quickly OR as much as 'everone else', so having that pounded in to my head from the beginning (from the surgeons) has really made a difference in how I view this entire experience. For decades, I've eaten VERY little (my ex-husband used to say I didn't eat enough to keep a hamster alive, my precious Mom told me "you're going to end up eating more post-op than you ever did pre-op"), yet gained slowly but consistently. My metabolism was so-o-o-o whacked, and it took my first surgeon to finally confirm that for me. What a weight was lifted off my shoulders that day! I'd suspected it all along, but to have a "weight loss professional" confirm it made all the difference in the world to me.
I'm not getting caught up in the "how many pounds did YOU lose this week?" mindset. It's great that many have that to motivate them, but the flip side is that if they don't lose, they may be disappointed, unduly so. This isn't a competition to me, it's the beginning of a life of health. I'm just taking this at MY body's pace. I'm sticking to the rules 'religiously', and when the weight comes off, it comes off. Until then, I'll just be happy that no matter how much I do/don't lose in any given timespan, that it actually HAS gone away, and I'll celebrate that! Most importantly, I'm thrilled that I'm healthy for the first time in decades.
Just keep doing what you're supposed to be doing and, as Rob would say, "STEP AWAY FROM THE SCALE"! (Just gotta love that Caboose!). Maybe weigh yourself once a month: I'm thinking it's a pretty sure bet that you'll see a difference on a monthly basis where you may not on a daily/weekly basis.
Hang in there and realize that no matter the 'quantity', YOU'RE A LOSER!!!

We're all in a win/win situation, we just need to look at it that way.
If the weight comes off rapidly, we win!
If the weight comes off slowly, we have less loose skin, and we win!
I actually HOPE my weight loss isn't quite as fast - because the slower we lose it folks, the less loose skin we're going to have.
But, If I'm fated to lose it quickly, I certainly won't be complaining about THAT.
